I have a 93 coupe. I am having my clutch replaced this week. The local corvette shop has quoted $1200 parts and labour to do the job (OEM Delco clutch kit, including reground flywheel) Local Chevy garage quoted $1450 for same job. Is $1200 a rip-off? I am relatively new to USA and corvette's and am not sure what it should cost. The engine is stock, but I have moderate plans for perf upgrades. The reading I have done suggests the OEM clutch should be good for reg street driving with some occasional hard work with moderately modified engine (350hp). Am aware of the aftermarket clutches (Centerforce/McLeod) but not sure if I need it. The current clutch has seen 90K and is slipping.
Autozone sells OEM LUK clutch kits for $250. This is the same Valeo pressure plate and LUK clutch that comes from GM. You don't need to resurface the flywheel unless it is grooved.
I'm putting one in my 96 this week or next. I am thinking about going with a brute borg-warner clutch from carparts.com for 335 shipped(after 10% discount). I was quoted about 400 to do the job from a mechaninc we know, another 100 if the flywheel needs machining...
I just replaced mine. I went OEM from Jeff Kopp of Superior Chevy. He is well known on the forum and his handle is 18CarFan. His price was about 350 for pressure plate/TO bearing and disk. Retail is about 550 from a local dealer.
My flywheel was a little burnt. Dual mass was $900+ local and Jeff had it for $695. I opted to cut it, I only needed 0.006 shaved to get a good surface. I may regret this later :)
It cost me $450 in labor plus $50 for the machine work.
I have heard a lot of horror stories changing the flywheel to single mass. Vibrations, not engaging properly, etc... A lot of people have had good success as well. I doubt I will ever push more than 400 HP so I played it safe and stayed with OEM.
My labor would have been a little less if I wasn't having a new catback exhaust installed at the same time.
Just to follow up......I went with the OEM clutch kit from the local corvette shop. Had the flywheel re-machined as well. Even though the original quote was on the expensive side ($1200), he seems trustworthy and as I intend to get some more work done which I can't do myself, I am trying to build up a bit of a relationship so I don't get burnt. Have driven a very soft 200 miles on it so far, and just started to give it some work last night....it's very nice to have the power back.
