I've been looking at exhaust for my 95 and all I can really find is the whole cat back kit. Now I'm sure that these are great and everything, but I would rather not spend $600-800 on one when the stock pipe doesn't seem to bad. So can I just pick up a couple Flowmasters and have a exhaust shop weld them in place of the stock ones? Are there any negatives to doing this?
On my '88 the stock Y was small and crimped at the bends, so the TPIS cat-back greatly improved flow and so I'm sure sound as well. Of course the TPIS cat-back required some mods at a custom exhaust shop as it doesn't just bolt right up.
That shouldn't be a problem. Most muffler shops will do anything you want from the cat(s) back. I know that you really don't want to spend the extra $$$ for the complete system, but the pipes are a little larger(2.5" as opposed to 2.25- I think) and the system sounds great. What ever you decide on doing, I highly recommend painting them with some black high heat resistant paint before you install and maybe have the shop weld some different tips on them. This system is about the ugliest looking from the rear out of the box that I have seen. I know because it is on my '94. After I painted them they looked much better. You know, I think you can buy just the Borla stainless mufflers and tips that will go directly onto your stock pipes. Just another suggestion. Good luck
I bought my vette w/ flowmaster mufllers already installed (welded) on the stock y pipe. I looks great and sounds awesome, although the resonance sucks. Also, stock LT-1 tips were welded onto the mufflers, and that beats the heck out of the stock L98 tips. Go for it!
Your stock pipes are 2.75" and the stock muffs are 2.5" internals. If you insist on the flowmasters, only get the three chamber ones or you'll go deaf. The problem is, however, that the three chambers don't fit as well as the two chambers. That's not to say it can't be done. The best bang for the buck is Summit racings 2.5" turbo style muffs for under $15 with an Aluminized case. Even Summits 3" muffs have 2.5" internals. The case is only 14" by 9" so they'll fit better than the Flowmasters and you can spend the money you'll save on some nice tips in whatever style you want. Your ears may not know the difference between the $100 mufflers and the $15 mufflers and I really doubt you'll tell the difference in the seat of your pants except where you place your wallet!
You absolutely can pick up just the flows and weld them in. No negatives I can thing of and your car will sound great and the exhaust flow will be much improved over stock.
Yep- I've lived with the Flowmasters (and no cats) for 5 years and 50K miles- I used the two chamber from Summit- no resonance, and very tame sound until I stand on it- and then it's even better........... and I'm an old guy who despises kids with their 4-cylinder open pipes.
Does anyone even sell 2.75" inlet mufflers? Should I just go with a 3" inlet and have them make a little adapter pipe? I hear ya about the 2 chamber mufflers....I had some on my 69 Goat. It sounded mean as hell, but boy were they anoying cruzing!! If the 2 chambers will fit better, then I think I might go with those, but I would get the DeltaFlow ones which cut down on interior noise drastically.
A buddy of mine has the Corsa Tri-Flow cat back on his 92, at that thing RESONATES like hell cruising at about 1500!! Sounds really good though, but it gets anoying too.
No 2.75" muffs, not even OEM. Notice that virtually all of the aftermarket systems use 2.5" pipes and muffs and STILL get power increases over stock. In reading other posts, it seems that the key to reducing resonance is A) keep stock resonator and/or B) add balance tube in the REAR where the pipes go their separate way.
Since you have a 95, you have the updated system without the y pipe. All you have is a resonator and two stright out mufflers. I went to Jegs, got some 40 series flows and had them welded in with my stock sticks welded on top of those. Total cost was 150 welded. You can remove the resonator but I doubt it will give you much more gurgle or noise. The flows I have are noisy down low but non existant cruising and since you have a 6 speed you can control how long its noisy! Good Luck and Curtis..... Baylor has a great chance!!! ;)
Step up to quality...Borla has a rear section for the 95, part # 11569. Our list price is $649.99 but you can probably find it for less from one of our distributors.
