my 89 will randomly die when i'm driving. the dash goe's blank until i pull over and cycle the key then it will start and run about 10-15 miles and die again. checked ecm ,all okay . any body had this problem? NEED HELP,THANKS.
Sure - but not with my Vette. Since your dash is going blank, you might start by checking the ignition switch. You'll need to drop the column to get a good shot at it but you'll want to check continuity across the contacts. Otherwise, I would guess that you have an intermittent open in a power or ground wire to one of the key sensors or devices that makes electronic fuel injection work. AND, they're a bitch to track down. If you have access to really good scanning software with graphing capabilities, you may be able to catch what's acting up. If not, start with the ECM grounds on the left side of the bellhousing. Make sure none of the wiring is frayed and try wiggling them around while it's running to see if it duplicates it. If not, move on to the sensor harnesses - I'd start with the MAF and examine it's connector and wiring really closely all the way back to the Relays. Ditto the 4 wire harness from the Distributor to the ECM. One is carrying a reference signal and if the ECM loses it, it shuts off the injectors so it's like turning off the key. Other than that, get out your Shop Manual (or buy one if you don't have one) and study the schematics so that you can get an idea of the additional wiring you need to look at OR post any scanning data you capture for more help.
also check the connections on the battery and engine grounds. On my 86, I had a poor battery connection and hit a bump in the road and everything died.
