Well i have had the thing in, along with a 160 thermostat, for a month and a half. I have gotten code 34 so many times i am going insane. Checked the items in the gm shop manual and tested items. (not until i first purchased a new MAF for $400... dumb rookie move) still getting code and now car idles rough and dies. ran perfect (yes perfect.. i know, don't fix it if it ain't broke) before doing this. I am assuming it is the chip conflicting with the car's programming. so i am taking it out and replacing it to stock.
Running an OBD-I system. when it ran, it ran at 165-170degress. seemed to work at first , then it developed this constant code.
any suggestions as to what to do with this chip and thermostat?
no seriously... any suggestions?
do you guys think maybe the chip was bad? I also have read ib the directions to use the supplied "tool' to remove the chip from the ECM
The shop that put this in for me did not place the said tool back in the box. Should i get a "tool" or is it as durable as a personal
computer install, which means as long as i am careful i can change it out by hand?
Sorry, I have not even opened my DCm so I am unfamiliar with PROM removal. You are correct that the best way to see if the rough running is due to the chip you should put the stock one back in. Good Luck.
I doubt that the "chip" went bad, but replace it with the stock chip to be sure.
You actually have a CalPac which is a carrier containing the EPROM and a driver chip. The CalPac has a large plug that goes into a socket in the ECM. It is held in place by a retainer in the ECM at either end of the CalPac. The only tools required is a 1/4" drive socket set to drop the left side under-dash panel, remove the two screws holding the ECM and the two screws holding the CalPac access panel on the side of the ECM.
Lower the ECM, open the rectangular access panel, touch the metal frame to discharge any static electricity, press outward on each retainer to raise and release the CalPac, replace it with the stock unit, press it firmly into the ECM socket assuring that the retainers are in place at either end of the Calpac, button it up and check it out. You can leave the ECM on the carpet while running tests to see if the problem is fixed.
BTW, I am running a used ($50 on e-bay) HyperTech Level II "chip" for an '87 Vette auto in my '88 with no problems.
There is a Tech Tip on how to wire the Aux Fan sw to turn on the main fan.
