Hello C4 compadres... Im normally found in the C2 section.
I was on the Jim Pace GMPP website earlier today and found
a shortblock listed as a L98/L05 shortblock with 2 bolt mains
listed for $869.... delivered with free shipping...
It's a little irritating that the internals are not described on the
description page...hence Im showing up over here with questions..
Is this shortblock going to have a forged crank??...did L98's,in fact,
come in the 2 bolt variety??... I'm just a little curious...
If the crank is forged, and shipping is free, and you're building
525hp or less.... this seems like a hell of a buy....
A regular bare ZZ4 block cost basically the same money...
Anyway....Im trying to de-cifer the assemblies make up without
having to go down to the Chevy dealer...
Most guys use the ZZ4 shortblock as the replacement for their L98. They were all 2 bolt mains, cast cranks. One or two piece main, roller or non is what you need to look into.
1985= standard gen 1 chevy 2 bolt main block
1986= standard gen 1 chevy 2 bolt main block, add 1 piece seal, right hand dipstick
1986 1/2 = same as above, but adds aluminum heads (cast iron clones),
1987 = same as above except adds roller cam, lifters, spider, center bolt covers
1988 = same as above except better alum. head combustion chamber
1989 = 4 bolt block, roller cam, 58 cc D port heads, 1 piece seal, dished pistons, center bolt rocker covers, windage tray
1990-1991 same as 1989
If they claim it is an L98, and it has 4 bolt block, it is the latest version

Reason: add info

'128 aluminum heads are not clones of the iron 624.
Center bolt covers started with these heads, 86L, not 87.
1988 got the D-port head with the major design feature an improved exhaust port over the '128.

The short block is GM Part number 12510735
The #12510735 short block comes with a nodular cast iron crank. It has
2-bolt mains, a 1-pc rear main seal and provisions for a roller cam. I do
not KNOW but I suspect it does NOT have provisions for a mechanical
fuel pump.
Crank: 12556307
Rods: 10108688
Pistons: 10159436
The ZZ4 comes with the 1053 forged crank, p/n #12556307. I believe
it DOES have provisions for a mechanical fuel pump.
1989 = 4 bolt block, roller cam, 58 cc D port heads, 1 piece seal,
dished pistons, center bolt rocker covers, windage tray
1990-1991 same as 1989
My '89 has a 2-bolt block.
The 1990-1991 engines are different from the 1989. One instance of
the changes is that the '89 pistons are dished and compression is 9.5:1.
In '90, pistons became flat-tops and compression increased to 10.25:1.
There were other modifications besides this.
I just bought that short block a couple of weeks ago and everything Slalom said above is on the money. It's the poor mans ZZ4. Cast crank and 2 bolt mains vs. forged crank w/ 4 bolt on the ZZ block. I'll be under 400 hp so I'll save the $1200+ diff. I believe the pistons are the same in the ZZ and L98 replacement block. (Hypers w/ -4cc)
I'm a little behind in my project but hopefully I'll have a full report by the end of the month.
Thanks for all the information..... when I saw the L98 designation and the
price my radar went on Alert.
I was hoping it had a forged crank... if that had been the case I would
have struck hard on that deal...
The free shipping is still a tasty perk...especially with heavier parts
like engines or heads... and the Prices are competitive with other
GMPP dealers who charge shipping
