Default Headlight issues

I have an 84 with a driverside headlight that won't come up, and upon inspection of the headlight assemblies it appears one of the previous owners updated the assemblies to the 88-96 versions. The specific problem I'm having is just with the driver side it won't come up on it's own, and if I manually crank it up, with the headlights on, it will close when the lights are shut off?? I disassembled the motor and gear and everything seems fine. I even ran it manually with a battery and it worked in both directions. Am I missing something??

Thanks
Mark

Sounds like the gears are going bad, do a search and you will find many threads on how to fix the problem.

As you must know the motor uses power in both directions. I'd check for ground and power at the connection to the motor to start then move from there. If the motor works with outside power the problem must be in the wiring to the motor. A bad relay or fuse maybe.

Had the same problem on my 85. The previous owner did a shoddy job installing the 2 wire conversion kit. I soldered and shrink tubed all the connections and they work great. Check all your connections. If they are all good and tight back probe the 2 wires to that motor at the module with a test light. The light should light up both on and off as the module reverses polarity. If it only lights up in one direction and all the connections are good, the module is bad.

You have 2 relays to open, 1 to close the headlights. They are located on the drivers side , in front of the drivers front wheel, mounted to the wheelwell. All three are located under a plastic cover, one small bolt on top and one on bottom holding it in place. This could be your problem. Bushings in the gears are the usual culprit but since it closes fine, but refuses to open, leads me to feel the relay is a possibility.

Found the problem. One of the butt splices that were installed during the conversion had corroded and broke.

Thanks for all the input guys.
