HELP!
RECENTLY MY SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON DURING A LONG, FAST TRIP TO THE BEACH.
I HAD MY GARAGE LOOK IT OVER AND THEY COULD NOT GET A CODE FRON THE ECM. THEY REPLACED IT WITH A DIFFERENT ECM MODULE AND TOLD ME TO RUN IT TO SEE IF THIS FIXED THE LIGHT.
I DROVE IT AT HIGH SPEED (65 TO 70) FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES AND THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. BEFORE THAT THE LIGHT STAYED OFF RUNNING LESS THAN 65. I ASKED SEVERAL PEOPLE AND THOUGHT IT MAY BE EITHER THE OXYGEN SENSOR OR THE CATALITIC CONVERTER.
PLEASE REPOND WITH ANY THOUGHTS OR IF YOU HAD THE SAME PROBLEM.
THANKS
I don't know what year you have, but I had the same condition on my 96 which has OBDII. No codes were ever set even though I checked at least 8 times. The problem seems to have been the gas cap. Even with a new cap I have to screw it on very tight to keep the SES light from coming on. Hope your solution is this simple. FrankLT4CE
I have an 89. When I stopped the first time I tightened the gas cap. This seemed to work for awhile, but then the light came on again. It doesn't come on if I just drive normally and not at high speeds. Also could you tell me what OBDII is? BLKBTY
I don't think your problem is related to the problem I had because of the difference in years. OBD II is the second generation On Board Diagnostics system that was standard factory equipment on 1996's.
if it came on while crusing on the highway, more than likely its an egr code. if it didnt affect the way the car was running then this was likely the culprit. to check the codes place a paper clip or some metal obect in between the top two right ports on the ALDL connector that is underneath the drivers side hush panel, right beside where your right knee would be if you were in the drivers seat. it will have two rows of 8 ports. you only need to use the two on the far right on the top row. then turn the key to the on position, with the engine not running. the service engine light should then start to flash the error codes. first it will flash code 12, 3 times like this: flash, pause, flash flash. that reads 1 pause 2 = 12. it will flash 12 three times then move on to the error codes. each code will be flashed three times, then move on to the next code. after it has flashed all error codes it will flash 12 again. if you can write down the codes it gives you and bring em back here we can tell you what it is.
Funny, that's what happened to my '92. Set an EGR code. I have NFC what is going on, but maybe the dealer does... (that's where she is right now). Any reason for the EGR setting the code?
its an EGR code, my 95 did it before i had it disabled, at those speeds and RPM, im guessing your a six speed right? and you were in 6th on the highway, do it for about 5-10 miutes and poof there is the SES light, its the amount of vacuum the map sensor is reading and it throws the code if its sustained as it usually is when your cruising at highway speeds. when you recycle the car (turn off and restart its gone right) if so, its the EGR. not sure of a fix for it unless you program the egr out, i did because with the hot cam the overlap was way more then sufficient to require an egr valve. best of luck!
Yup, that's exactaly the case! About 80 MPH in sixth (getting about 33 MPG  ) and whamo, SES! Funny thing is, it looks like the entire EGR path (hoses and valves) have been replaced recently. Oh, well, I can live with it.
