I'm debating putting Nitrous on an 87 Corvette. It's basically stock. Has upgraded ignition, no mufflers, BPP Vortex Rammer, 3.07 gears. I'm wanting to put a 125-150hp plate kit on it. Any ideas on what it'll run in the ¼ mile?

Re: Question about Nitrous on an 87? (TIMSPEED)
I was seriously considering buying a kit for my 90 a few months back and the feedback I got here suggested I'd be looking at a 1-1.5 second reduction in my ET depending on the car and how big a shot I was running.
Some guys say a 150 shot is safe for an L98 but others say to stay at a 100 shot for safetys sake.
IMO, I'd wouldn't get a N20 setup unless it had a fuel pressure cutoff switch to kill the N20 supply if your fuel mixtture went below a predetermined amount, I'd also get a progressive nitrous controller to help put the power down safely and not shock the drivetrain too much. You can also get ignition retard boxes to retard timing when on the juice but whether they are needed on a basically stock car running a 100 shot seems to vary on opinion.
It is critcial your fuel system is up to the task and your motor is in good tune and that you use the N20 wisely. You only need things to go wrong once to lunch a motor.
After the mods finally get into my car, I will be installing a 100 shot kit. No more. We have the crappy Hypereumatic (sp?) pistons, and no spark cutoff. Our only rev limiter (besides the intake) is a fuel shutoff that you can have programmed into your prom (yet isn't set from the factory). But then again..... you wouldn't wanna be running nitrous and hit the fuel cutoff. That would be one hell of a lean condition.
Over 100k on the car. Do you like your bottom end intact?
A 100 shot on an L98 will reduce ET by about 1 second, but you will not be able to get many passes on it before it blows up. The cast psitons we have are not very strong for Nitrous or superchargers.:(
I'm building up the stroker motor, so I'm not worried about the bottom end lasting more than a year on the kit. I just wanna have some fun on this motor before I build the stroker motor. I'm actually buying the bottom end of the motor when I get the kit.
I have a 100 shot on mine. I have not seen the track yet for #'s, but do like the feel of an "extra" 100 HP!!! As for the pistons, I know nothing about the L98's, but up to 150 Shot on an LT1(Hypereutectic pistons) should have no adverse effect. I do not recommend anything higher on a "stock" motor. My system comes with an auxilary fuel pump, thus making the nitrous cut-off switch non- mandatory. If using stock fuel pump only, safety switch is a MUST!!!! Also, a timing retard will be needed. I installed the MSD Digital6 Ignition which has a retard feature. I am at 5 degrees retard when the nitrous solinoid is activated. Hope this helps.
Ya all of you neah sayers are right, it will just blow up if you put nitrous to it. I must have a super special L98 because I have been running nitrous on my stock 91 L98 bottom end for years and it has over 111,000 miles on it and will pull easy 12's on the hottest days with street tires. Most of the people saying that nitrous will destroy your engine probably haven't ever run it. You can take their advice if you like, but I would do my homework and make my own decision. In any case, have fun!!!!
