Default 1984 Alternative cold air location-setup suggest requested

OK. I have a 1984 Vette that I replaced the crossfire EFI setup in total. In its place is a Holley projection manifold with a 7.4L GM TBI unit with larger injectors. I am utilizing a standard round air cleaner.

i would like to develop a cold air system. the SLP TPI cold air kit is one alternative. I would need to use some of the stock 1985-1989 TPI intake. issue is wont fit 1984 radiator shroud nor hood. 1984 is different than 1985. this is what i was told.

at the TBI unit i found a nice aluminum molded Procharger carb bonnet with 2.375 over all height. the inlet is dropped a bit for max clearance. very nice.

i do see that i could place a cone air cleaner right at the upper drivers side(inside shroud assembly just before the radiator. possibly a 3 inch by 6 inch cone filter would fit? question is would it allow flow at 650+ CFM? then i could plumb it to TBI unit with PVC or aluminum tube.

any suggestions?

I have a somewhat similar setup (454 TBI w/dropped base 14 inch filter). I've wanted to plumb in a cold air system from in front of the radiator, but ran into the same hood/radiator clearance issues you have. I eventually just made a cold air box that seals to the raised cowl (I had to raise the hood a couple inches to clear the turbo manifolding). Works fine, but just a lot of work. (As a side note, I saw another C4 individual who had a nice stock car type air box on his. I'd like to find the manufacturer of that box, as it looked a lot more professional than mine.)
Due to how much I had to modify the bottom of the hood, I couldn't easily use the stock '84 type cold air system. You could modify an air filter housing to match up with the air outlets under the hood. Is that an option for you?

yes it is. however it would have been helpfull to use the original CF AC assembly to act as a template. I sold it for racing bread. i guess it still has effect to bring in some fresh air into the area.

the air cleaner would need to be in front of radiator ideally. not sure if placing it right in behind the fan-in front of engine would be of any help? that area might be quite a few degrees cooler and be simple to duct.

Default Cold Ram Air

Just cut a hole in the radiator shroud directly below the front oval hood opening. I sealed mine with universal weatherstrip.Works great.
Nice cool air and a Ram effect at speed.

I'll send pictures if anyone wants.

And ram into WHAT??? Reread the thread.

Your two easiest options were to make, or modify, the base of the air cleaner assembly you no longer have, to fit the TB, or a cowl hood fresh air inlet. Those hoods with the forward facing scoops are ugly.

"Ram Air into What"

I must have mis-understood. I thought you were working on a n 84' which has cold air duct work as an integral part of the hood from the front to the air cleaner.

Sorry

The current Hood has a ducting system that is a Cold air intake. you merely need to figure out how to plumb it into your current filter design.

correct me if I am wrong, (CFI) but the hood when closed has a port that fits onto another duct leading to the front. The stock Air filter cover had two inlets that matched up with the hood.

this is technically right he would havta fabricate a air box that fits ontop of his unit either using the original air cleaner by cutting the bottom of the air cleaner assbly out and replacing with a bottom that fits his system. shouldnt be too hard or even expensive. the tricky part is getting the hole in the right place to line up with the hood and most likely hight issues if its too high or too low. other option is to fabricate a box out of scratch. either way still has same issues with front to back and hight allignments. i thought about these possabilities myself.
if you want i have an 84 and can at least measure the dist from rear of air cleaner assbly to the firewall to give ya a relative front to back position if needed. not sure of how to measure left or right measurements or hight without looking to see what a good point of reference would be.
