Power Addition Plan
I posted the super ram intake forum a few days ago. I have the late 86 vette with aluminum heads, 4+3, and added true dual exhaust with free flow mufflers, no cats.
I have been reading on Vaders home page and in the Lingenfelter book. To add more power i am now thinking of doing the accel 211 roller cam. I think the cylinder heads will be fine since they are the 128corvette aluminum heads. In the Lingenfelter book, he says the stock corvette headers are fine and cost little in the way of power. For the intake, i will stick with the TPI. Lingenfelter says the 211 cam can be used with stock or high flow runners. So i may get high flow runners and do some porting of the plenum and base.
Now i am wondering if i will need to get a custom burned chip, or if i can get away with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and tune it in on the chassis dyno i can use for free.
More specifically to the cam-
I want to get roller rockers, i am not sure to get 1.5 or 1.6 ratio?
In the lingenfelter book, he said the 216 cam does not require valve guide machining to the head, so apparently that must be done with the 211 cam?
Does the H.O. heads specifically refer to the 113 head and not the 128 head? because the book was talking about issues of non-hardened guideplates, and roller rockers not fitting under the valve cover on the H.O. head.
Does somebody know where i can get the .12 inch shim to eliminate the exhaust valve rotator on the exhaust valves.
It also sounds like i may need stronger push rods, and valve springs?
Does somebody know of a place with a kit that contains all this stuff with the cam. Have i covered all the issues?
go 1.6:1 rollers... it's worth it.
I also recommend adding a pair of bullet cats. Once you do this work, the exhaust note will go up and it won't cost any power to speak of. Also, add an x-pipe, it will improve performance over a basic true dual setup. You see, the SBC works better with a crossover. That will allow the opposite banks to help each other.





1.6RRs, dont bother with 1.5s.
H.O. is the '113, which is an upgrade on the '128.
I would go to full longtube headers no matter what the book says, which I dont recall off the top of my head.
I knew that my 86 vette just had a flat tappet cam. I was just thinking of putting a roller cam in, that was untile i realized that the roller lifters for pre 87 blocks cost $500!
I now would like to use the accel-74212 flat tappet cam that is a substitute for the roller. I have been unable to find a source for this cam even on the lingenfelter site. Does anybody know where i can get one? If not would i be fine if i can find a cam with similar specs?
Also, I was thinking at first to just try putting 1.6RR with the stock cam and see what the effect is. Im thinking i could get away with leaving the stock springs in without worrying about valve float especially since there is not much reason to go over 5000rpm.( at 5000 rpm the engine is producing the same power as at 3400 rpm on my dyno runs because the torque drop off is so bad on TPI)
Would the rest of the valve train including the pushrod, guideplates,etc be fine to leave alone.
Lingenfelter mentions that on the H.O. heads that most aftermarket roller rocker will not clear the magnesium valve covers. I did not know if that is a problem with my 128 heads.
I was looking at the jegs brand roller rockers. Does anybody know the difference between the center bolt self-aligning ones that cost a little more and the regular ones?
I found valve covers at Jegs that are made taller to clear the roller rockers.
I was still wondering the difference between the Jegs brand center bolt self-aligning roller rockers that cost a little more and the regular ones? Also there are special ones with .15 inch offset which i dont know is for.
I could call jegs and ask them if no one knows.
