Default 1990 L98 distributor noise

hey there, i've replaced my hei dist cap/rotor/coil with hypertech's cap/rotor/coil, and have noticed a strange ticking sound coming from it, that i can feel with my hand on top of the cap, is this normal? i've never had this happen before but all my other stuff has been ac delco to this point. any thoughts or ideas would help a lot, thanks!

You would be able to tell the best, but it sounds like the rotor is hitting the terminals in the cap. You might pull the cap and inspect for signs of hitting.

RACE ON!!!

Pull the cap and be sure the rotor is secured with those plastic screws; you might try a little blue Loc-Tite on them.

I usually place my hand on the side of my HyperTech cap when tweaking base timing and have never felt any ticking or vibration.

Do the easy stuff first. Look inside the cap for signs of interference.

pulled the cap... looks like the rotor is hitting on the #1 point in the cap. a rotor is cheap, if i filed it down a touch do you think it would throw anything off?

Is the rotor tight? If so it should not be hitting just one terminal. Is the #1 terminal sticking out more than the others?

Contact HyperTech about the problem, you could have a defective cap.

I would suggest a Napa brand brass terminal cap and matching rotor. I have used them for years with great results. I never did like the idea of driving around with soft plastic screws holding my rotor down
I pulled mine off after 100 miles and kept the coil.
