Default The oil filter question rears its ugly head

Again

I know, we all know that Fram sucks now as an oil filter and for that same reason I'v been using Mobil 1 filters for the last two years

But, a problem has cropped up in the last few months I'v been looking for the Mobil 1 filter to fit one of my cars and I have not always been able to find it one store will have 3 of the four filters I need and I spend an extra hour going to another store or two to find the last one

What is another good oil filter to use if I can't locate my beloved Mobil 1 filter

I chose K&N because it's one of the brands that I've never seen negative comments about. They always seem readily available for the Vette application around here. (Edit - I did end up stocking up with an online purchase because I can never find one for the Altima.)

Plus, I love having the hex welded to the top. Not a big deal for the Vette but it's a lifesaver on our other two cars.

Good old AC/Delco PF-52 is my stand-by filter.

I prefer Hastings with synthetic oil. Hastings is a depth type filter rather than a thin paper media.

Default oil filter

I've used Bosch. About the same price as the PureOne.

Has anyone on this site ever had a "bad" Fram filter?

I ask only because I have used them for several years, on several personal cars/trucks, as well as a 35+ truck fleet I used to be in charge of maintaining, and then on a 75+ truck fleet I also serviced, maybe 10 years ago...and presently we use them on industrial vehicles and equipment in a filthy steel mill that doesn't believe in "regular" maintainence...never once have/did I experience any problems with the filter.

Am I just that lucky, or is it an overly exxagerated worry?

I have.
More than a few collapsed internally on the dyno and almost cost a motor.
Cut them open and they were a mess. Motors only made 65 psi.

I may cut the next few open at work to see what I may find. It'd be interesting to see how they react to abuse and lack of regular maintainence, if they fail in regularly serviced vehicles.

So what actually happens to tip you off that there was a problem, sudden oil pressure loss, or something else?

Just before making the first pull(after warm up),
oil pressure dropped 20 psi. Swapping the filter fixed it. This happened 2x more while we looked for a store with a filter other than fram.
After installing a motorcraft filter, we made 20 pulls with zero issues.
I would not have believed it if I did not see it first hand.
Motor them went out and ran the 12 hours of sebring race. Finished 2nd in class, if I recall.

I used K&N until my last oil change...I was convinced to try a Wix filter and so far so good...I have about 2000 miles and 35 drag strip passes on it to date...the Wix certainly was a lot cheaper...

Try here for oil filter review: http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfi...lterstudy.html

I believe there was a CFer that had a site reviewing oil filters and a major oil company that makes filters threatened a lawsuit claiming damages from his opinions on their filter. First he changed his site to say the oil filter qualities were his opinion and then later folded his site.
