Default miles/longevity

On the Mobil 1 vs. Royal Purple discussion some posters noted that their cars were well into the 100K and more mile range. I'm looking at an '87 with 143K. Should mileage in and of itself "scare me off"? Or is maintenance regardless of mileage the overriding factor? As we know, something can look good at any mileage. Thanks for your thoughts, larry

If it was well maintained I would not be afraid of that mileage. I would expect to get it for a reasonable price because of the mileage though. I have seen well cared for L98's go well over 250,000 miles and still not use oil. There are other factors besides the engine that can cause you problems. Transmission, wheel bearings, suspension components, electrical gremlins. I would make it my business to know what has been repaired or replaced. Good luck.
