I noticed a burning oil smell when I got out of the car and said to myself great now what is leaking. So I looked
around and it looks like its the rear end. I did not get all the way under the car yet, is this a common problem ?
I am thinking the rear pinion seal, is that the usual source of the leak.
Thanks.
My 86 with 114k miles had a similar problem. After I pulled out the rear, I found the rear was leaking around the diff seal, the side stub axles, and the pinion seal! It used to burn on my exhaust and smell terrible. The rearend itself was in great shape and there was no play on the stubs or pinion, the seals just gave out. Another bad thing, was the fluid leaked onto the strut rod bushings and disintegrated them.
The only good news is, it only cost me 2 weekends of labor and 240 bucks to get it inspected and resealed. I went ahead with poly bushings at the same time.
I had the same "smell" problem and it was the diff seal leaking at the half shaft and gear oil was on the exhaust pipe. I had new bearings and seals installed in the diff for less then $300, but I did the R&R labor on the rear end components myself. Also was a two - three day project and the C beam is a major pain to remove and install. Found a bad half shaft bearing at the side that leaked.........I suppose that could have been the cause. Previous owner drove it for some time with the U joint and I had to replace the hub bearing as well. Not an easy project.
Thanks for the replies, I will have to get under the car to see exactly where the leak is, it does seem to be leaking
on the pipes. Since the car only has 43,000 miles on it, one would not expect the seals or bearings to be worn,
but you never know, could be a bad universal caused bearing wear. Or it could be a bad gasket. I am about
ready to put away for the winter, I can add this to my list of things to check/fix.
Thanks.
