Here is the message I got when I went to order the FSM from Helms!
Qty Item Number Name Unit Price Total Price
Remove ST36489 1989 Corvette Shop Manual $92.75 $92.75
This manual is a copy of the original publication. It is possible that this item will be in loose-leaf format. Any wiring diagrams in the original shop/service manual are NOT reproduceable and are no longer available.Part of a Base 1 ST36489S 1989 Corvette Shop Manual Supplement $16.00 $16.00
Subtotal: $108.75
It sounds like the soft bound book may no longer be available from Helms. I would recommend you call them and ask what you will receive for the price. The wiring diagrams in the 89 FSM are large "fold out" pages. Some of these pages fold out to 4-5 pages. If you want the original, look on Ebay and see if you can find one. You may consider placing a thread in the for sale/wanted section and see if someone has one laying around.
Assuming it's only the fold out schematics at the rear of the Manual, it's not's missing much (though on my Year - '89, it's the only place you'll find that the car was prewired for the ZR1 helping you figure out a couple of wires that go to nowhere). Make sure Section 8A - Electrical is reproduced as that will include the schematics. I have a reproduction '89 and everything is there, but the schematics, as opposed to the original, are in black and white instead of color. Some of the wiring (lines) didn't reproduce, but the circuit and color are identified. I'd take loose leaf any day over bound. All of my bound manuals fell apart within a year.
I ran into the same thing when looking for a manual for my 85. I actually ordered mine from the store on this forum. It's a reproduction of the GM factory service manual and came from ZIP. It had the wiring diagrams
I ordered a helms manual for a Cadilac I had and it was a very good manual but I ordered online and I believe they sold my email information because after I ordered it I started getting tons of spam
The early FSM was a single volume, the FSM for my '88 Vette came as the main manual plus the 8A electrical suppliment; both were soft cover bound in the red cover.
More recently I picked up the FSM for my '88 IROC-Z and it came as the main volume in loose-leaf form plus the 8A electrical suppliment in soft cover bound form both in the white cover form.
I simply picked up a large 3-ring binder at Stables for the main volume and have found it rather convenient to be able to run selected pages through my office jet coppier so I can take the copies down to the car while working on it.
hi there guys,
when i brought my factory complete set of 1991 service manuals from mid america motor works, the main large section came in a stack of loose leaf papers unfortuntely!!!
i was very dissapointed in this!
when i contacted ma motor works they told me that thats how they come now from the supplier " helms" im assuming?
any way i wasnt happy so ma motor works gave me a credit back half the money plus i got to keep the manuals!
so then i went out and brought 4 large 4 ring heavy duty folders plus about 1,000 clear plastic folder sheets to place each single double sided print manual in each folder!
it took 1.5 hours every night for a week to put every sheet in a clear plastic protector folder!
i thought i was never going to finish to tell ya the truth!!!!
any way im now thinking i am glad i got what i did as the pages are now protected from dirt and grime and as 65zo1 has said you can always take out a particular page and photo copy it if you need too which is very handy!
any way cheers
thanks
glen
