Hey guys, they printed my questions in this months Chevy High Performance magazine! "Shifty Vette" The only problem is.. the question was asked a couple of months ago, when i was building a 355 for my Vette, and now I'm building a 406 with a Lunati cam, 480 lift, 230 duration, just like the Impersonator that mag built, so I'm not really sure if I want to go with the 700r4 tranny, maybe with that much power I should go with a TH400? I'm just not sure about what kind of mods I have to do to the tailshaft of the trans to make it fit, don't think mine will fit the TH400.
I guess this is a question for Pete K? Is it possible a TCI Street fighter 700r4 would work ok? don't think I can beef mine up enough, I have the older 27 spline!! arrggg! I will consider all options, thanks, guys, bee kewl! BB
The cost to upgrade an 82-84 trans would exceed the cost of starting with an 88-92 core. I suggest using a later core, and modding it properly. You will be better off.
A 700R can be beefed up to hold about 600HP. It is about as modified as your 406 is compared to a 350. I believe that power level is about max. I did this on mine (1988) even though I am not making remotely that much power. One never knows what the future holds
Unless you are going to make a pure stripper out of it, the convenience of something that fits without headaches is worth the 700R. The internal gear ratios are not optimum for drag racing.
Wait till you break your current stuff. See what broke (it's probably not what you expect) and then upgrade.
EDIT: Most driveline stuff is broken by very sticky "drag" style launches. These are tough on parts. If you don't run a drag slick or some ultra wide (355) tire then you should be pretty safe no matter what power the engine makes. Even a Nitto drag radial in 275mm will act like a good clutch and keep the drivetrain intact.

that was my original thought, though considering the work involved, i figured do it right the first time? but thats ok if your loaded with money, lol, it does have the b&m shift kit in it, and it looks more beefed up (the valve body) than on my buddies 90 camaro.
the governer gear is stripped right now, so i need to get a replacement for that (somewhere?) Pete, i would like to get hooked up with that converter if you dont mind, maybe message me or i will you soon, thanx, guys!
I would absolutely avoid TCI converters. I have had terrible results with them. I can hook you up with a much better unit if you like.
what kind of problems with a tci? my friends wanted wants me to install one in his ls1 z28 I have never used tci .i have only used vigilante converters they are wicked.but he wants the tci for the price .help me talk him out of a tci ,tell me what problems you had .thank you
I have had every problem possible with tci. First 3 were bad out of the box. They were not balanced and shook the fillings out of my teeth. One had no lock up function. One had a snout crack during a test ride. One made so much heat it killed the 10,000 mile trans in a couple of days.
Your friend can buy any converter he chooses. He cannot say he was not warned.

well i guess that's it for tci in my books.i will not let him put that junk in his car .you had that many problems with their products who the hell is building the converters their .i cant believe a company that is proud to put made in the USA on their products can put out junk like that. thanks for the advice, greatly appreciated.

There are quite a few guys that run tci stuff and love them. I have no axe to grind with them, and I am not bitter. For me, it was live and learn. I am sure it is possible that I got the only 5 or 6 bad converters they ever made, but I doubt that. As I said, I personally have had poor results.
I am currently doing a turbo 350 for a friend. It has a tci converter as well. allowable end play is .025 or less. This 6 month old unit has .180 end play. Tomorrow we will measure the endplay on his crank to see if it took the thrust bearing out. Poor kid is about to puke.
