I bought the Hypertech ThermoMaster chip for my 1984, years ago. I tested it in back to back 1/4 mile runs, as the Hypertech techs said I had to, in order to get a valid comparison. My car ran between .05 and .10 slower with the chip. I sent it back. Save your money for a custom tune after your modifications justify it.

RACE ON!!!

Zero.

Dont spend money on it or any other chip until your mods to the engine warrant it.

Agree with Vader, your stock doesn't need or require a chip change, go do the basics, tune-up, etc.... exhaust is your best performance gains on a stock engine...
See search function and use as its a great tool for finding info on your car....

If you install a cam the chip from Hypertech will not help at all. Get a custom chip, you will need it with the cam. You can change most everything and still use the stock chip until you play with cams.

Just for your info. I bought a Hypertech when I first bought my 85. For the next several years I had problems with "PING". I tried different brands of gas, different octane levels, added octane boost and finally played with the distributor setting until the ping was minor (still there, but minor). When I had a custom chip burned, they did a base line first (which was with the Hypertech). Turns out the chip was advancing the timing to 43 at WOT and reducing the fuel to run LEAN and PING!!! It was the damn chip. Since the custom chip by TJ Wong, no problems and the car runs stronger with each modification. I am still running the stock cam.

dont bother with ANY off-the-shelf chip

If you are going to change the cam, have the chip custom made for that camshaft and the rest of your combination. If youre going to change the cam on an 85, you need to change out the heads too, because theyre not helping you make power. Don't bother porting them either.

I would wait until all the other stuff in the engine is done, or in progress, to purchase the custom chip.
