Yeah, I bought a giant allen key at Sears, it worked fine for the fill plug but would slip on the drain plug, the plug socket wasn't deep enough.

The impact wrench worked perfectly.

ok....so i'm kinda screwed now!! I think i rounded off the inside of the drain !! But... i did add roughly 2 (a little more) quarts of the expensive stuff from GM. It works great. the car shifts very well, the clutch releases easier (not sure why). Thanks for all the help!!

If you haven't completely rounded it off, give it another shot when the car is hot. Park it, jack it up and try then. Heat will make the drain hole bigger. That's what I had to do.

Good advice. And get a new plug before trying to get the old one out, no point in putting a bad one back in, then you'll be forced to use a mity-vac to suck the fluid out then next time... probably not very fun.

Check the C4 FAQ for proper part numbers of which fluid to get. Note: Part numbers have changed for the GM fluid, so check the C4 FAQ for the new numbers.

You can get the giant allen wrench from Sears, I forgot the size, but its "the biggest one they make" LOL. I can check the size when I get home if you need to know.

Get one of those $10 hand pumps from any auto parts store, its the easiest way to get the fluid in.

Prepare to get DIRTY. It's EASY, but VERY messy.

What worked for me was a 3 to 4 foot piece of (I think) 5/8 heater hose. Ran the hose down thru engine by the starter and into the fill hole. Stuck a funnel on the top end and poured the GM fill until the fluid ran from the same hole. Drain pan caught very little overflow. The trick was getting the car level to insure the proper fill amount. My driveway slope was to extreme, so I pulled the car halfway onto the street and backed up slowy onto the driveway until it appeared to be level. It was also easy to crawl underneath to remove plugs.

Welcome to my world,... If you checked my posts on the topic you would see I had to tap the drain plug,... weld a pry bar to it, and break it off.... Then I had to flush the trans because of the metal filings I got in it which was a true pain....

There is an updated plug to fit the trans... it fits into a socket instead of the hex which tends to stripping,... you all may want to look into replacing that on the next drain and fill...

AMSOIL makes a transmission fluid specifically designed for this application and its cost is very reasonable.

Morning,
For future use, here's what I did.

Autozone 17mm socket (for VW and BMW's) for the drain and fill plugs. I think it was $5.99.

3 quarts/liters Castrol 10w60 from BMW dealer. Just under $9 a qt.

Ordered new drain and fill plugs from Bill Boudreau www.zfdoc.com . Just call him and he will send them out priority mail for $14 shipped. they took two days, shipped on Monday, arrived on Wednesday. Once they got here, I had to remove the fill plug first with a pipe wrench and then the drain plug with the same. I am assuming maintenance had been done previously as both my plugs had already been hammered and I couldn't use the socket.

Let the tranny drain overnight and then install the new drain plug to 26 ft/lbs.

Refill until fluid drips out the fill plug hole.

Install the new fill plug to 26 ft/lbs.

That's it. Pretty easy.

Go ahead and buy an extra drain plug and maybe an extra fill plug. The old ones can get damaged during the removal process.
