I´ve got a ticking noise from the passenger side underneath the car, only audible on the passenger side..its a clicking or ticking sound...not a knocking..
so let me tell you what was done until to now..
i replaced rod bearings, inspected main bearings and wrist pins( fine!!), changed timing chain, adjusted valve lash..and it still ticks..
i don´t think that the injectors cause this noise, yes, they click too, but i think that is not audible underneath the car-or??
yesterday i started the car and get under it to listen...
no noises from oil pan, no rattling catalysts ( i checked with a stethoscope, a wooden dowel, aso..) ...the noise comes definitely from the upper area, i would say injectors..
in fact, i think i have a few very loud injectors at the passengers side....
No problem... If it was an exhaust leak, I would guess it would be from the header.. which you could tell it was coming from there.
The one other thing it could be is a lifter... which is pretty much right below where the injectors are (though the sound would sound a little closer to the middle of the engine). A lifter will get louder as the engine RPM's go up... injector noise won't ...
What do you mean with lifters?
Do you mean too much lash in valve train, or a stuck hydra-lifter?
i adjusted valve lash a month ago...
noise doesn´t increase with rpm, its constant...
Got the same problem on drivers side>>Put in oil stabilizer and 4 quarts of 10-30 and it went away only to be heard every once and a while. After 1200 miles, drained the oil and went back with 5-30 and it's really loud now, all the time.Thinking it might be a collasped lifter or more probably a varnished one.1996 with 90,000 miles

Thanks again...
A broken lifter will be pretty noisy (the spring loader inside breaks). If the noise is constant, it probably isn't a lifter. It probably is just one noisy injector. If you want to find out for sure, you can unplug one injector at a time while the engine is running and see if the noise goes away.
In the case, it is a lifter, where does the noise then come from??
When i listen to the center of the engine with a bar no noises where noticeable
..
But when i listen to the plenum, i could hear the ticking of the injectors..
so, the lifters and the pushrods are located in the middle of the engine...if there are one ( or more ) bad, i think the noise should come from the center of the engine..
But as i said...all quiet there...
This may be a long shot, but my car ticked like that when I first got it. Once under the car, I noticed that the pressure fuel line was not secured to the frame with the insulated adel clamps and was knocking against the frame. The clamps were there, but I could see the line moving around. The L98 is batch fired, so the fuel pressure drops at once and then pressurizes the line quickly, thus pulsating the line. Like I said it is a long shot, but it may be worth looking to see if all your lines are secured. Good luck.
