Hey guys,
Need some opinions...I was driving home from work today (I'm stationed in Mannheim Germany) was doing about 150 KM max on the autobahn, got home and pulled into the garage and there was smoke billowing out of the right wheelwell...popped the hood and the third plugwire back on the right side was covered in oil. dripping down on the exhaust manifold and smoking.
Need to know what the diagnosis could be and how bad
Hopefully your valve cover might just need to be snugged down. I know alot of the lt1-4 cars that do extensive autocrossing will develop a quick like leak in that same area when driven hard that only happens under certain circumstances. Often times the valve cover just needs to be snugged back down.
Thanks guys...PCV good...does not look like its coming from the valve cover...Appears to be coming from the dipstick shaft...checked the seal and grommet all appear good and fit snug...What do you think? I will get a mirror and light as soon as I get home and doublecheck. Thanks...
took my pcv out and it rattles fine. Ran some tubing from the dipstick to the the headlight well and put a coke bottle in there...ran it 20 miles and it was 1/2 full (6oz) of oil...No water...good clean oil...if not the pcv what would be forcing the oil up the dipstick tube?
If you know for sure your PCV system is working properly then it's not good news. I just got done with the same problem and it was blowby going past the rings creating too much pressure in the pan. The dipstick tube is the easy way out under these circumstances. My '85 also ran fairly well until I would romp on it, then the oil would come out of the tube.
One simple test is to remove the dipstick while the engine is idling and check to see of pulses of crankcase vapors are coming out the dipstick tube. If so, then there is lots of ring blow-by going on.
