Default Muff's vs No Muff's

I've read on here that eliminating stock muffler's add no performance gain, but switching Stock muffler's to brands like Magnaflow etc will increase HP.... Why is this ???

I think it depends on the car...you never really increase HP anyways, you can free up whats already there, but is sometimes held back by stock parts. Some cars seem to love a more open exhaust than others. Some make more power with mufflers.

There are time that an open exhaust can cause a small drop in power because it changes the backpressure in the system that other brands are known to maximize.

Im sure youll get better explainations than this.

Depends on if it's an L98 or LT1.

With the LT1 I haven't gained any performance by switching to Corsa, but I did lose some with no mufflers.

The loss or gain you would get would not be noticeable except on a dyno or in a timeslip, you definitely won't "feel" anything.

The main benefit of an aftermarket exhaust is sound and appearance, not performance(at least not on a stock LT1).

I can't speak for the L98.

I can't give any technical info, but I have a little experience story to add for an L98.
I have no cats and Borla mufflers.

When I pulled my rear y-pipe off at the empty cat, it sounds amazing, like a nascar almost, BUT I found you lose almost all torque that the backpressure from the mufflers were creating. It does seem more lively once you get the RPMs up much higher, but your takeoff speed is really sluggish.

I put the muffler setup back on and all the torque is back.

L98's need some backpressure aparently.

my l98 felt a little more "peppy" with elims. but i have no data to back this up, of course i did have rotted out flowmaster muffs. on before the elims. now the sound is a different story...awesome sums it up!

I am also no expert, but as i understand it, backpressure basically resists exhaust from exiting the cylinder (the exhaust fumes are "backed" up). if you free up this resistance (i.e. headers, highflow cats, or no mufflers), then air should exit the cylinder more easily....creating less resistance for the engine to operate. this should yield more hp.......am i missing something here?

how much hp does a true dual setup free on a stock l98???

i plan on using high flow cats and 2.5" piping from a local exhaust shop.

You have a 95, so the stock exhaust system is already pretty good. You should only change these things based on sound preferences.

Both will add HP by removing backpressure, but what they are really doing is moving your power peak rpm upwards and it can feel like you lost some torque off the line, so if a little tuning is done you should never lose any ET or anything else. You shouldnt notice it one way or the other on the LT1.

True duals over stock, 15-20 CHP is a decent guess just based on owner commentary. That assumes dual hi-flow cats and performace muffs or eliminators.

I had the elims done on my LT4. The whole concept of low end torque and back pressure is beyond my knowledge at this time. I really did not notice enough loss (really any) that it concerns me. Perhaps it is because the car is really loud over 2k rpms in 1st and 2nd, I might hold back a little for fear of a cop being w/in a mile or so. But the sound is serious performance and I like that.

My solution is to install a Dynomax flow x in place of the resonator. We'll see how that goes. But I do like the elims, no doubt a better sound!

Maybe people are just saying this so they won't have to listen to any more loud-*** cars driving by their window while they try to sleep.
