Default LT1 VS LT4 HEADS

Hi guys, i'm new to the board..My name is James and I own a 1996 LT4 Vette and a 1995 Z28 CONV....MY question is this..We all know that the LT4 head flows much better than the Lt1 head stock for stock,But I am wanting to put a set of all out ported heads on my Z28 and I keep hearing the same thing from several people in the industry, if you port both heads to the max they flow about the same with the 2.00 it and 1.55ex valves>>well if this is true then I could save lots of money on not buying the LT4 casting...Has anybody else herd this?

I've heard you'll still get a bit more out of the LT4's ... course if you want to save some cash, just stick with the LT1 heads and have them ported.

I would save the money on buying the LT4 castings and put it into the stock LT1 heads. My 95 had stock ported heads and they flowed awsome. Even better than some flow numbers I saw of ported LT4 heads. I can't wait till I get my LT4 heads done over the winter to see there #s though.

I'd stick with the LT-1 heads, because if you go with the LT-4 heads you'll have to get a LT-4 intake also!

I would worry more about who is going to do the porting and valve job then what heads I have. Flow is where it's at, so if the guy knows what he's doing you should be fine with either set, but as the previous post says, you'll have to have a matching intake for whatever set of heads you get. I would use whatever heads you already have, you'll save money, and not have the hassle of possibly getting someone else's junk, that's if you buy a used set. Find a good shop to do your heads and get the flow data from them, and see what kind of numbers they already have seen with your type of heads. It might pay to shop around first. I would also get a bigger cam and change out the rest of the valvetrain while your at it. Yes it's alot more money, but your car will be really fast after that is all done. Good luck!!!

The LT1 head is great! I would stick with that for a few reasons. The LT1 intake runner is like 176cc while the LT4 is 195cc. The LT4 heads will flow slightly better, but at the expense of velocity. I would not trade velocity for anything in a street car. If this was a Comp set of heads, I would opt for the LT4, but it is not.
Second, the flow numbers for a good Stage II port and polish on both of the heads does not deviate to much. Again, the LT4 heads flow better, but at expense of velocity, which is just to valuable on a street car.
We build some of the best cylinder heads in the industry. With an agressive can, exhaust, and programming with the rest of the bolt ons, you are looking at ~390+ RWHP out of our StageII LT1 heads. There are a few(not just one) with well over 400 RWHP also!!!
Again, let me know if I can help,
