I seem to have lost third gear if that makes sense. My car is a 91 A4 with 190ish thousand miles on it. The car drives fine in 1st and 2nd gear but when it goes to shift into 3rd it just revs like its in netural. If i give it a lil more gas to bring the revs up it'll shift back down and into 2nd untill i let off. I just checked the fluid and because i'm stupid and haven't thought to check in at least four months it was low, black, and was about as thick as water. Could this problem (hopefully) be fixed by changing the filter and fushing the fluid in the trans? When it comes to this car's tranny I don't know anything about it, so I'm all ears to any suggetions about what else could of caused this and maybe how to fix it.

Reason: grammer and info
Thats what I figgered I'ld hear. Thanks for your help at least i have a clue of what i'm dealing with now.
When you do rebuild it, consult with your builder about aftermarket, upgraded 3-4 clutchpacks. Also, install a beast reaction shell. The factory reaction shells break quite a bit.

Vette 53,
I've got absolutely the same problem, but I am driving it on 2nd gear for two weeks already, because my service pacae is too busy.
Listen what Pete K says, he gave good advise on what to do.
Let me know when you start rebuilding, I'de like to know what upgrades you did.
