Default First Mods LT1.... Thanks Guys!

I bought my 92 4l60 a year ago. Right away I wanted to start modding it. Fortunately I found this place. I left the Vette stock and just drove her last year. After reading the forum for a year and asking some questions, I decided to do my first mods. I had some 3.54 gears and a shift kit installed. What a differance!! Feels like a completely different car!! When I stomp on the gas from a dead stop the tires spin untill I let off. I was rolling about 20mph and nailed it and she broke the tires loose without a problem. A big improvement!!! Anyway I just wanted to say thanks to the people that ask questions and those that answer them.

Great move. Gears are a fine way to improve your LT1 experience. Now that you've started modding, there's no end in sight!

The first question on headers you have to ask is Shorties or long tubes. That's a whole other debate and we don't want to beat that to death AGAIN. The next question I would ask is how long do you intend to keep this Vette? If long term, go with a good S/S header or at least a ceramic coated set. Your OEM cat back exhaust is pretty good, but quiet. But if a long term Vette is what you plan on, go with either a B&B or Corsa cat back. If you go with shorties you can use your OEM cats, if long tubes get 2 high flow cats that attach right on the end of the headers. I have shorties just because I bought them before I found this forum. Shorties, as you know, will give only half as much gain as long tubes, but with no engine mods you won't notice too much with either. My moto is build for the future (if long term Vette).

The next thing short of going with a cam and head work, is roller rockers. With our 92s we have to cut off the drip tangs inside the valve covers which is easily done with a Dremel tool.

Have fun with her.

Been thinking about some 1.6 RR too. I already put on some Proform valve covers which are taller than stock, so there shouldn't be any clearence issues with RR.

How did you get the valve covers under the alt/ac bracket?

I put some washers under the braket that attaches to the intake and raised it about a half inch or so.

I haven't paid too much attention to the mpg, I've been having too much fun. I'm sure I lost a couple of Mpg's, but for me the trade is worth the fun factor.

Long tubes, tune, and 1.6rr's. Those simple mods will spoil you. Large bang for the buck. You'll have a damn quick, smooth, drop dead good looking street runner that will stay together, outrun most of what you'll meet on the street, and will still pass a few gas pumps. After that, you'll be spending more $/hp. I'm there now. Waiting on the STS turbo folks before I go any further. Wish they'd hurry up. A 450+rwhp blown LT1 motivated C4 has me more than a bit intrigued.

This is exactly how I proceed when building ANY car, Vette or otherwise... Rear gears make the largest difference outside of nitrous in "bang for the buck" for 99% of all street cars.

Longtubes and high-flow cats would be the next logical step, IMO... Maybe then 1.6RR's, and then leave it alone and enjoy.

Nice work!

Thanks for the comments guys! Along with considering 1.6 RR's, I've been thinking about getting the long tubes and high flow cats. It's just a matter of finding the time. I'm gonna go to the local test and tune Wed and see what kind of numbers I can get.

The long tubes are a great next step, particularly since it doesn't sound as if it'll end there. Obviously you already know they're a great baseline for all future mods that will continue to pay dividends. The 1.6 rockers are a relative simple and proven upgrade too. Those and the headers should net you an easy 30 HP. A good dyno tune after could easily be good for another 10 or 15. Stainless Works is not so far away from you, they're over near Cleveland. They have a great set-up for the A4 cars which allow cat placement just off of the header collectors, not always an easy feat for automatic C4s. And there's still plenty of clearance around the cats, important since they're on either side of the tranny. I'm currently using their headers, R/T cats and connector pipes and it's a very nice set-up. I first had it hooked to a modified stock system and now to my custom system. It worked nicely with both.
