Saw this pic on eBay and wondered if the MAF burnoff is supposed to be attached to the ECM (assuming the smaller box is the MAF burnoff module...)? I have an 85 and the burnoff module is NOT attached to the ECM on mine. If something is supposed to be attached to the ECM, that could explain a few things.. Anyone care to comment?
No, it's not actually Attached to the ecm, it Is, however, mounted right next to it. The cable in the pic is the actual one that connects the module to the ecm harness. The pic does show you what the module looks like
If (on your '85) the module wasn't there you would know it. Unless someone has modified the car to use the ECM from an '86-'89 and thereby eliminated the MAF module...

Would it throw a code, or just run rough? I honestly don't recall seeing the burnoff module, but I looked over a yr ago and wasn't looking for it.
I don't remember my 85 ECM having that attached.
If your burn-oof Module is not working it will throw a code... Do you have a Factory shop manual?
I NEVER plan on owning an 85 again if your interested in it...
Too much of a one off vehicle as you probably know.
Just curious what kind of problems are having with yours?

Mines actually pretty reasonable. I have battled with an irregular idle (bounces around randomly from 520 to 700 rpm at idle). I also get pretty crummy gas mileage (avg. 16.6 mpg). Both seem related to a vacuum leak, but darned if I can find it. All in all, I'm really happy with it. Considering what I paid for it, I can say it's infinitely better than driving a Ford Focus!!
I'm not sure about the '85 but on my '88 there are two relays. A mass airflow power relay and a MAF burnoff relay both side by side mounted on the firewall near the battery. I do have to replace them every now and then for some reason!
Sorry I could not be of more help!
The '85 MAF module (other years beginning in '86 don't use one, they have a pair of relays instead, and a different ECM along with some wire harness changes) is mounted above the ECM, actually behind the "bread basket" or crash pad in front of the passenger seat. Thats how you get to it - remove the crash pad. It is NOT accessible from below nor is it attached to the ECM itself.
If it wasn't there the MAF would have no power and would not be working - the SES light would be on, but the thing would probably Run - but not go into closed loop.
The MAF module can best be described as bullitproof - it's about as reliable as the Frame. They just don't go bad. Simpler and less trouble than the '86 and up twin relay deal.
