Okay, much to my dismay I’m gonna drop my D44 and ship it off (can’t find anyone local) to get some gears installed. I’ll be doing it in my little garage w/ the car on jackstands. Anybody got any special tips for doing this? The job looks pretty straight forward. Also, are there any specific tips/advise for removing the rear spring? Thanks
I just happened to do this job. Use a jack on the steel part on the end of the spring take the nut and cotter pin off and slowly lower the jack.
It is not a bad job just make sure you remember where everything goes. The C beam is a bit of a bitch to line up so just use a jack on the tranny and lift until the holes line up. This will save you a good buck on the gear change.
I just did this on an 85. Same as above advice but make sure you have the car fairly high of the ground. The spring will come down about a foot past the end of the bolt.
I used this Tip as a guide when I did a D36 to D44 swap on my 84. The hardest part is the C Beam. Make sure you have a good jack under the trans to support it. You will need that support until the D44 comes back and you reinstall. I did mine on my back as well. Have a friend come over to give you a hand when you drop it - and reinstall it. The extra set of hands are worth it.
You may have problems with "While it is up on jackstands I might as well.............." Actually it is a good time to do whatever.
