Default Hood won't pop open

My hood does not pop up when I pull the release. After I pull the release I have to hold it then grab the hood and pull it up, and this is a real PIA! Could it be as simple as new hood springs? Or maybe an adjustment? Any help appreciated.

Thanx,
Dennis

Its those tiny little shocks up there by the air filter. Replace both of them. They are about $20 each. I did mine today, what a difference. benny

Wow, I would have never thought of that! I was convinced it was the springs.

If it's a PITA, you're lifting it wrong...stop using your rear end and try your hands.

with the small lifting shocks at the front. Easy fix and a huge difference.

I sent you a PM with a paper I wrote quite a few years ago, but the part numbers may still be good.

...no it's not! ..it's the springs at the end of the hood!....the hood pistons merely add ease to the opening of the hood while lifting. the springs are compressed when the hood is shut and when ya pull the release the hood should pop up placing the hood pins out of the receiver.

And I sent you a reply! Thanx for the great info, Ray.

Also, I did a search on the part number for the spring upgrade and it is indeed still valid!

Hey Dennis,

with the Da Mail Man.... it's not the hood shocks in the front they assist in lifting the hood, I replaced mine and I still have to open the hood like you do..so it must be springs, let me know I need to do this repair too!

Hi Rich,

I guess this problem is more common than I thought! I'll probably order up some new springs first and see if that takes care of it. If not, I'll get deeper into it.

This is a dumb question, but are you sure the cable is pulling both releases? Not sure if your 86 is the same as my 90, but on my 90, there is actually two cables, one for each side that releases. Years ago I had a problem with my hood not popping open and upon closer inspection, one of the two cables was frayed and needed to be replaced.

Have you tried a little of the lube of your choice on the 21 year old latches. Ok, don't replace the shocks. benny

I haven't checked the cables yet, but I will go over the whole set-up today.

Benny, didn't mean to give you the wrong impression. I am going to do the shocks eventually too, the hood is a heavy sucker, but just want to get the hood to pop for now! I did grease the latches up pretty good, but it didn't help.

Thanx for the help guys

OK, checked out the cables and they work fine, and are in nice condition. I'll order up some springs and hopefully that takes care of that!
