Base timing should be at 6* BTDC.

...... and make sure you open the EST connector before timing the engine.

I had trouble finding mine until I rotated the distributor enough that it appeared before the tab. I couldn't see it when set correctly because it was under the tab. That seemed like a stupid design to me but I put a mark on the front of the balancer and set it correctly. It wasn't until I was checking my work on CF that I learned of balancer separation and sure enough, I couldn't see the mark because the outer part of the balancer had moved toward the engine, moving the mark under the tab. Balancer has been replaced and all is well.

On mine, the balancer was almost completely under the timing tab. You could see the outer rim in the tab teeth (cutout v's) but it was otherwise pretty much flush with the front of the tab. Once I knew what to look for, it was obvious that they outer rim had moved as there was a clean surface where the two sections meet (uncovered by the movement).

I'll try to post a photo in the next couple days but send your email by PM and I will send a photo tonight.

From my search of CF on the topic, the balancer moves toward the engine and can cause damage to the timing chain cover. I don't believe that there was a case of it coming off the front which would cause more serious problems. Someone correct me if I missed that account.
