Hi, I am looking at a '92 with 90K miles. The calipers have some play in them and you can jiggle them back and forth slightly but noticeably. Current owner replaced the pins (not sure of their function) but didn't seem to help. What could be the problem/fix? I'm assuming it IS a problem. Thanks, Larry
I'm searching for that answer also. I just rebuilt my front calipers on my 90. I cleaned all the road dirt off of the calipers and the brackets and used new hardware for the reassembly.
They seem to work just fine stopping the car but now they are loose and rattle on bumps. I can slide them side to side by hand and I can't figure out what I did wrong??
"Current owner replaced the pins (not sure of their function)"
On the late C4 setup, the only thing really holding the caliper on is the pin.
Pads seat into the caliper , pads are then locked into the cast bracket by the pin .

Hard to say why without looking at it. I would check the rotor(s)(thickness spec) and pads. Also make sure everything is assembled correctly, although I don't see how it could be wrong. Bias spring installed? Might be as simple as a ANTI rattle clip.

A small jiggle may just be normal. The caliper is supposed to be free to move side-to-side in the bracket. The inner pad is mounted on the pistons and as it comes into contact with the rotor, the caliper slides over to bring the fixed outer pad into play. I am not sure how one would determine how much jiggle is too much - it would depend on the size of the gap created when the pistons retract.
If there is free vertical movement, check for the anti-rattle springs on the bottom of each pad as mentioned above. These will prevent a jiggle in that direction, but you'll be able to move the caliper when pushing against their resistance.
I'm having this exact issue after replacing rotors and pads on my 89.. If I stick my fingers through the wheel openings and try to move the caliper it makes a very slight clunk back and forth.. and when I go over rough roads at slow speeds I can hear them clunking up there.. makes an otherwise very nice car sound like a junker.
I used Porterfield R4S pads.. and I can't recall these anti rattle clips..
Are the front pads different? (is the inner different than the outer) and would that make a difference?
There is one on each pad, so 2 per side. With your spoked wheels (assuming from the avatar), they should be easy to see as they rest on the bottom of the caliper bracket.
