I saw your post on the U-Joints.....how much did you pay to have your vette specialist do them....mine are being done in 2 weeks.....by my local mechanic...said it would be around $160 to do....figures $20 per joint plus couple of hours labor....sound about right?....should I worry or is this a pretty much up front job.....my guy seems pretty good.....
I went to Wilton Chevy in Ct. Flat rate was 2hrs @$83/hr. U-joints were $60 each. If you can get a good job for $160, jump on it.
By the time I had 4 wheels balanced and rotated front to rear along with parts & tax I was at $401 out the door 3hrs later. Of course he did hook up my AIR tube to the right side header off the cuff which was worth some $$ to me (I couldn't get it connected).
go to the store and buy an 18 pack, then go to autozone and get 4 u-joints for about 40 bucks. total cost is about 55-60 bucks. its really not that hard to do yourself at all.
That's right, only two U-joints. I knew the parts price was high but needed it done now.
After seeing the procedure here and the tools required I'm reassured of the right choice.
Anyway that's the first time I came out of a Chevy dealer anywhere with spending under $500. I had thought that was standard dealer's fee for anything on a Corvette.
I have to go with whatever my mechanic gets....or I get charged $65 an hour labor for using my own parts.
Kinda stuck...what is the general one...to be expected a mechanic to find?....and should I be persistant on him getting a certain brand...or staying away from one?....I don't really want to be a pain in butt....but at the same time...worry considering this is something that moves around back there and is always under stress.....
Spicer are the brand that originally came with the car, and are much stronger than Brute Force. There Brute Force have what most of us would call a "design flaw" causing them to snap under heavy loads like drag racing with something other than street tires.
Vette92 (I think it was him) had a good writeup comparing the two of them.
