Default Fans stopped working> Help

I just purchased a used C4, coupe red with 51,000 miles, my first C4. I have had 2 C2's and 4 C3's but want something I can drive daily verses on the weekend only and this one seems to fit the bill. Also I'm a new member and this is my first post. I super cleaned the entire car this weekend to get to know it. Gunked the engine and cleaned the engine compartment with different stuff to clean and make it shine. Next, I fired it up to dry it out, one problem, the fans for the radiatior will not work now, I must have screwed up a switch or something as the fans were working prior to the cleanup. I don't even know where relay's are or what to look for, any advice??? Thanks,,Jim.

As BADDUCK said above, your profile is needed to give the year of your car. Your posting did not indicate which year C4 you own

If you are starting up the car (with a cold engine) and expecting the fans to run, this will not happen on a C4. But...you can turn on the AC and see the fans work when the engine is cold. Otherwise, the fans are controlled by the car's computer and will come on when the coolant reaches a specified temp.

JimW: You did not complete your profile Look at the red horizontal band at the top of this page. Select the "User CP" and then select "edit profile". You can check the contents of your profile by double clicking on your name in a posting. Hope this helps!

WIll do, thanks, also, I turned the engine off when the temp gauage hit the grey zone, the fans did not come on and the car overheated for a few seconds, also spit a lot of antifreeze out just after I turned it off for the first time.

A local store just suggested I add water wetter to my coolant to help overall, anyone know about that?

I wouldn't worry about the antifreeze coming out. Thats normal when the caps off and the car is overheating. I'd be careful though running it hot with the cap off is a good way to get seriously burned. Later on you will need to burp the air out at the bleed valve. I have an issue with my secondary fan not turning on. I was told there is a large fuse in the fuse box by the battery that I need to check. You may want to do the same. Also check the wire connections on the fans. Make sure they are plugged in. I would not let the temps get too much above 230 when troubleshooting the problem. The fans turn on and off based on info in the PCM (car's computer). Something could be wrong there but I doubt it. Do the fans turn on when the AC is turned on? Once you get the fan issue corrected then there are other things you would need to address if it still overheats. If you look at this thread below you can see some of the PCM fan info I posted.

His profile says 96, but it's always best to post the yr. so we don't have to go looking.

Mines an 87 so I really can't help to much here.

I started to just feel up around the fans and push and pull stuff, then I truned on the A/C initially, nothing, then the fans came on??? Ghost in car or??? anyway I drove it with the A/C on and off and now both fans are working, and the temp bounces from a little above 185 to a little below 185, have no idea what happened unless i got something wet and it dried up or something was loose and I acidentally got it together, thanks for the help, hopefully they will keep working, luv the car!

I think it is safe to say that if it was in the engine compartment it got the treatment, and so it got wet, so whatever that thing is I guess it did, but the good news is that today all is well and working and looking sharp, thanks.
