Default tail lights keep blowing a fuse.

I know electrical issues are a pain to figure out, and not many people comment on them, b.c there is a lot of testing involved.

Well some time my 85 c4 blows the funs and my tails dont work.

TODAY i figured out how and when.

If i get into my vette and have to put the tilt wheel back down, and the lights are on, it will most likely blow the fuse.

If i get into my vette and dont touch the wheel, then it wont blow the fuse.

The good thing is i think i figured out where the problem lies.

HAS ANY ONE ELSE HAD THIS ?

Also I wonder what it can be ? How does it relate my tail lights to the steering colum ? What should I do that the hole thing apart again and look for a frayed wire ? or do wire testing ?

Any help would be great, as i am good at electrical work, just not the testing ..

Mine kills the fuse about every 2 years. No clue why. The turn signal wires feed through the column. One of mine actually wore through and broke. I cut and soldered in a new one, but that fixed a turn sig issue, not the tail light thing.

The only thing I can think of is a short somewhere in the steering column. Check under the dash first though.

I had a car in storage for over a year once, when i pulled it back out and tried to crank it I found that a number of the wires had become brittle/cracked and a few of the terminal leads had broken or oxidized. Look at the wires, and see if anything is burnt.

Ha,I have a 95 Olds Minivan that has a similar-like problem but doesnt blow the fuse, and wish it did instead of the repair job I have to do after...anyways,If the steering wheel is left up high, the rear brake lights dont come on,but put the wheel down, they work.

Its not the same but yeah theres something pushing/rubbing against the wires somewhere under there.I took off the dash lower panels and lowered the column and etc and I cannot find a damn wire broken, chafed,or whatever the term is to explain it.

Back to saying I wish the fuse blew instead, theres a problem I live with, will not take it to the dealer..every year or so,the ignition switch blows on the cloumn. Its located on top of the steering column hidden away under the dash. When you lower the steering column, its the switch on top that when you turn the key, allows the current to flow and start the car,run and etc.

When you turn the key, theres a long metal rod ontop of the column that pushes inside the column switch to activate the switch and let the power run and start the car.

For some reason, every year or so,mine dies, and the car starts and runs but the inside lights, dashboard and etc go out.Speedo quits and the car runs like a real POS.Its not blowing a fuse anywhere but instead kills the switch in the same spot.I cannot find a short or a rub anywhere!!!!

I took everything apart and checked everything and found no troubles.
Just seems like a year or so,it blows out the switch.

Just wanted to share that long **** story!
