Hello-
I am trying to figure out what's going on on my 1996 HVAC system and hope someone has seen this before. The vents move to the other positions, but very slow(almost 15min to get to recirculate). I tested each vaccume line from the programmer and the lines/actuators apprear to be ok. The vaccume source is also good. I took apart the programmer and each solonoid appears to work fine(hold vaccume, give it 12v and it pulls from the source line). I would hate to get a new programmer when it appers to work fine. The vaccume nipples on the programmer itself appear very flexible and I am wondering if these and just collapsing? Thanks in advance
Tom
I've had other-than-Corvette GM cars that had symptoms similar to yours. One had a leak in the line to the vacuum reservoir, the other had a crack in the vacuum reservoir (black spherical thing about the size of a softball). Hope this helps.
I believe I've searched this before and found out that they changed the HVAC controller "nipples" from hard plastic (in '95) to some type of flexible material in '96.
The end result is that the "flexible nipple" tends to crush under vacuum and will cause a large delay in response time.
The common fix is to replace the controller body with one previous to '96. This is a problem I plan to work on as well since my '96 has the same symptoms as yours.
I have 2 programers boxes with the "Better" nipples.
$225 each.
you can take the better nipples from my boxes, and it'll fit directly in your 1996 box.
Thanks for all the replies....it is now FIXED!!! It was the rubber nipples collapsing under all the sucking. Cut them back about 1/2 way and everything work great. The end of the rubber nips are very thin walled and cut off the vaccume when old.
My ‘96 takes 1-1/2 minutes for the ac vent go from the floor vent, to air coming out from the dashboard vent. Are there any “how-to’s” on the Forum to eradicate this problem?

Do a search about 1996 HVAC issues, defaulting to defrost and heater, and other search terms. There is a common problem the '96's have that may or may not be your issue. Mine has the issue and getting ready to fix it.

If you do fix your problem, please let me/us know how you did it. Pictures are always welcome too..
