Default l98 coolent problem

okay trying to get the car tuned up and ready for the track and got a coolant issue . my coolant temp gauge has never worked since i got the car. i watched it very close today and when you start the car it is fine in the lowest section of the gauge. but after a few minutes it pegs way beyond over heating.....which is impossible in such a short time of course. but i took it to the track and after three runs it blew coolant out the cap.....bad....and today it did it agian when i let it set ideling in drive thru for a few minutes. i know the water pump is working because when i added water to the system with the car running i could see it..."peeing" it back in where the cap goes.

What year? It sounds like 1989 or earlier by the statement I quoted. First, it sounds like it isn't totally full of water. I echo the fan statement, above, and suggest you remove the radiator and check for debris between the fan and the condenser. Before you remove the radiator, give it a good thorough flush.

RACE ON!!!

Coolant out the cap? Perhaps the cap doesn't hold pressure at all. Does the overflow get full? There would be a lot of heat and pressure if the thermostat was stuck closed.
