I want to put in a LT4 hot cam and am wondering whether it is necessary to put in a new timing chain and gear set. I know ideally I should put in new lifters, timing chain and gears but the car only has 51k miles on it. The water pump was replaced at 45k miles too. If the car had 80k miles on it I would not be asking this question.
What do you guys think? I am trying to save a little money here.

I would plan on replacing the timing chain and gear when I replace the opticrap at about 80k miles. I am doing this work myself so labor costs are real cheap!

I'm looking at a HOT cam install this winter as well. I came up with about 160 bucks or so for stock replacement parts from discount GM source (www.gmpartsdirect.com or 18carfan).
I think that is a no-brainer...higher rpm cam...new timing set...
Even new valve springs would be worth while-may even be leaving HP on the table with current set with 50K. They are only 45 bucks or so.
