Does anyone have any experience with replacing the trans gear selector shaft seal with the trans in the car? Mine leaks quite bad which I'm assuming is due to age/dry rot since it sat for 3 years without being used.. Anyway does anybody have any useful tips on getting the old one out? Mine is being a real PITA, I tried for about an hour today to get it out with little luck, tomorrow I'm gonna take the y-pipe back off and try at it from a few more angles.. It's very similiar to a pinion seal except very small and I don't have a seal puller that size, I've been using a snap on pick set.. Any tips? I think I'll be able to get it out with the exhaust out of the way so I can get a better angle on it but any tips would be welcomed!
I have the luxury of tapping them in on the bench with all of the linkage(and shaft) removed. They are a bear in the car. KD makes a $30 tool that allow you to pull the old one and press in the new.
Although I do not have a part number, it is easy to locate. This tool works perfectly.
we're actually talking about a 700, I should have replaced it before I put the trans in the car, but I've never had one leak on me before.. I'm speaking of course in general in terms of GM hydromatics as this is only the 3rd 700r4 I've ever owned (the first 2 I swapped out of f-bodies after gernading them).. don't know the history of it, all I know is that it came with my $700 corvette (which gives me a bad feeling), so I figured I'd bolt it in with my engine and see what happens. As of yet I havn't even tried driving it but figured for a $2 part I might as well fix the leak as I'm kind of obsessive compuslive about my cars leaking (which doesn't go well with SBC's). So far I've got her running quite well in my garage with no apparant leaks but this one.. tomorrow I'll try at it again with the y pipe removed.. As far as the tool from KD I'm extremely intrested...but I've never heard of KD, where would I be able to get it from? I found a tool on MAC's website https://www.mactools.com/portal/site...extfmt=default but it's a little more money than I'd like to spend on this.. is the KD tool similiar? I can't picture in my head how it would remove the old seal..
Will do first thing tomorrow! Can you describe how it works? I can't picture how it pulls the old seal out.. I just can't tell much from the picture, all I see a threaded piece that has a hex on one end with a small bolt going to it, in front I see what appears to be a small piece of pipe.. just can't picture in my head how this works.. I'm sure it makes a lot more sense once its actually in your hands! That's why I miss old school parts stores where you could actually see and touch these sort of things.. For as much as the internet is a useful tool its killed the old stores that knew exactly what u needed when you described it to them. I'm so sick of going to Advance Auto or any of the other chain stores and after describing exactly what I need being asked what year and model? Ugh sorry for the rant!
Imagine a hollow easy out. It digs into the seal. Then you turn the screw in the center and it pushes off the park shaft and pops it right out. Exactly how it installs the new seal, I am not certain. Everyone I know that has used it, swears by it.
