Was wondering if I were to install 1.6rr on a stock 85 engine would I see any improvment in it or would it just be a waste of time and money. Also, would I need to modify my valve covers to do this.
Thanks
There can be a gain with the increased ratio. But, new springs would be a good idea. Also while you are there, valve seals are cheap. You can buy expensive narrow body rockers, or grind down the valve covers and save a lot of cash.
Yes, you will see a small gain. I would suggest 1.5 on the exhaust and 1.6 on the intake. Several posts have suggested that this combination runs and idles better on the 1985. I installed this combo on my 85 and noticed a difference. I did not dyno this change, but there was a positive difference. You will have to grind off the drip tabs on the inside of the valve covers. Do not try and break them off, you will break a hole in the cover.
I do agree that this would be a good time to change out the springs and seals if you have high miles on your car.
So, from what everyone is saying, is worth the effort then. I have a spare set of valve cover, so I can rework those. Any suggestions as to what brand to buy?
From what you are saying then, only need to buy 8 instead of 16 then, or do I need to buy 8 1.6rr and 8 1.5rr?
Thanks
since were talking about this....what is the specs on the 96 lt1 intake and exhuast and valve lifts and all that...im looking for a cam that i can put but leave the rocker arms and such stock...for now..
The best way to grind down the drip tangs is to use a Dremel tool and a small cutting wheel. It's best to use the Dremel with the extention so the filings don't short out your tool. Ask me how I know. As far as which rockers, I'd stay away from Crane's aluminum ones as they get noisy and set off the knock sensors. I'm thinking about the S/S rockers, and I'd really suggest new valve springs while you have the rockers out. How about a cam? I know it's tough to keep up with our clubs Z06s, but we C4 guys have to try.
On a budget, you can go with stamped steel rockers just like the stockers, except for the ratio. They are fine for a mild engine, and no valve cover work is necessary.
Be sure to check for interference between the push rods and the head with the higher ratio rockers.
