Default Port/Polish Heads?

Why do people port/polish there heads. Does it make a difference in power or reliabliity? Wouldnt it be better to just buy new heads?

Porting opens the valve chambers up more to move more air and fuel.

Polishing helps it 'flow' better by reducing friction.

Its like 200 dollars right? Is it really worth doing with Cast Iron heads? Any extra parts/special labor needed? Any noticable gains?

there are noticable gains, but it depends on which heads you are porting, i have a set of 1968 Z28 heads 041 casting which are decent heads, we put bigger valves and stuff, there are better ones out there to start with though, or you can get a head that is cnc'd to flow good right from the git go! like the new AFR eliminator heads, they are the S#$& !! but we are talking $1500. or so, so if you have only $200, port and polish and putting 2.02 valves in is the way to go as far as i see it.

I think he means that Kid was banned due to inappropriate posts in off topic...meaning he can't see this one anymore, either.

He seemed like the type...

IMHO, $1500 for the new AFR's is a bargain. I paid that amount just to get my stock heads CNC ported/valves/springs.

Also, I doubt he can get his stock heads ported and bigger valves for $200.

Probably doesn’t matter anymore with this post but my understanding is the polish does nothing but look good and help show imperfections in the porting job. Good for seeing what quality porting was done but no performance advantage.

He had a good question here, however, he's gone for good.

If I had a bigger budget I would buy some TFS or AFR castings and have them ported.

Maybe,----- but you're right, bigger valves, suitable springs and the work to install bigger valves is going to be more than 200 bones......... unless you borrow the "Way Back Machine from Mr. Peabody"

I guess he got tired of all the insults and lost it. He was just a kid trying to learn about Corvettes. From now on when I see a post that I don't agree with, I will just ignore it. No need to attack someone just because they're not a gifted Corvette mechanic or anything else.

I paid out just over $1,000 6 years ago. If I could have a do over I'd buy new ones instead.
