The service ASR light is coming on and it shows a code 72. I have a 92. Any ideas on were to start looking? Also any suggestions on spark plugs? Thanks
well, that isn't the ASR code 72... That's the thing with the newer C4s, they have three separate computers to choose from!
in this case, it's a serial data link error. you will need the Helm Factory Service Manual to help debug this. Hell, from what I can figure, you will need a series of specialized (re: GM dealer only) diagnostics tools. Think TECHII and you are getting close.
A hint - check circuit 800... and also be sure that the harness to the EBCM (the abs/asr brain under the left storage bin) is good (sometimes, water can get in). ckt 800 is a tan wire off the EBCM harness (pin 4) through a couple connectors (stays tan) to the ALDL (pin M) and then to the CCM, pin F12 & E13 (still tan) and feeds the two serial data lines.
When I tried to diagnose Serial Data Faults the Manual called for a Kent Moore break out box along with a -10 adapter. The break out boxes are on e-bay for $20.00 to 100.00 but the -10 adapter is not to be found. Kent Moore says they will be available soon at $600.00 a piece. I went out on a limb and replaced my ECM, Got 1 off E-Bay for $150.00 and that fixed it. Cheaper then buying all the diagnostic tools.
For the plugs, I like the NGK TR-55 Double Platinums. They'll work fine in your '92 LT1 engine just like mine.
For the plug wires, you can get the stock AC/Delco ignition wires at www.GMPartsDirect.com for $48.64 plus shipping. The GM part number for the ignition wire set is 12074093.
A lot of folks like the MSD or Taylor 8 mm wires, too. You can get them at AutoZone, Pep Boys and other auto parts stores.
Don't forget the anti-sieze compound for the plugs and be sure and remove them with the engine cold. Be ready to replace the plug wire holders, too, as engine heat makes them frail, brittle and easily broken as you remove the old wires.
You can get the O.E.M. GM style replacement plug wire holders at AutoZone. Ask for MotorMite item No. 40284. They run $3.99 for a set. You'll need two kits to do both sides of your engine.
I had the same problem. I just replaced my ECM, problem solved.
The ECM is hard to come by. I took mine out and had the local Chevy dealership get it rebuilt.

They've been discontinued by Eckler's Corvette Parts.
