hydra lifters help..

hi all

one question..

What makes a defective hydra-lifter going to click??
i know, how a hydra works, but i don´t understand, how they can click when they are bad..

Please help

collapsed if its anyhting like a normal hydraulic lifter!
maybe the same design that keeps them from pumping up, isn't allowing it to pump up enough?
