Default Removing old gasket material.

I am in the process of replacing my water pump and opti. So far it was a snap. Everything came off easy, got the opti on with no problem. I'm trying to clean the old water pump gasket from the block, and it might as well be welded on. Does anyone know of anything that will ease removal of the old gasket? Getting a scraper in there is awkward at best, and I don't want to nick it up. Thanks.

If your really having that much trouble, you could try using one of those sprays that eats the gasket away. I'd be careful not to let it get anywhere else but the area your working on. Then go to town with the scraper.

It's not easy, but I use a single edge razor blade.

Apply a thin coat of RTV on both sides of the new gasket, and you won't have to worry about this again.

I used the blade from an old block plane. Honed it and cut a hole in it to attach some bar stock for handle. provides a larger level scraping area, lots of leverage and it's stiff and doesn't hurt fingers when scraping.

Thanks for the suggestions. I picked up some gasket remover from NAPA today, and between that and a razor blade, I hope to have it clean tonight. Thanks again. Tom
