Take off the belt, belt tensioner, and remove the power steering pump. You don't need to loosen the lines or drain the system, just move it out of the way. This should give you the space needed to get the driver's side wires off.
I just changed mine a couple weeks back. Mine's a '95 but should be the same I would think:
1. Remove belt.
2. Remove belt tensioner. One bolt.
3. Remove bolts from power steering pump.
4. Rotate power steering pump forward a little to give more room to route the wires behind it.
That should give you enough room to get them changed. You can't get at the wires on the OPTI without removing the tensioner. After you remove it you'll see it's much easier.
How long did it take you for both sides? I still need to change mine out. Did you have to jack up the car or remove any wheels?
I like to pull the wheels because it gets the car a little higher and with the wheels off I don't have to bend over so far. But I'm not a teenager anymore. Of course pulling the wheels takes away my favorite tool shelf.

Man, I wish you were closer to Louisville. I sure could use some help changing mine. I don't have a floor jack, plus my house is built on a hill, so I can't jack it up on my inclined driveway.
