Default Took over five hours to replace weatherstripping

Maybe I'm slow or too meticulous, but it took over five hours to replace the weatherstripping on my 1990 coupe. This was just one section along the A pillars and the front roof line.

It took three hours just to remove all the old adhesive, which was like contractor grade caulking. The old weatherstripping came off in 1,272 pieces the size of peas and grapes. I used plenty of the 3M adhesive remover that you guys recommended. It definitely helped.

I started the job under a clear blue sky. I looked everywhere and couldn't find one cloud anywhere. I checked the weather forecast and there was only a small chance of isolated showers in the evening. I figured I had plenty of time for the job.

But three hours later when I had just finished removing the old weatherstripping, I heard thunder in the northeast sky. It got louder and dark clouds moved overhead. My worst fear had materialized. I wish I had a garage. I wish I had taken the car to the shop that sold the weatherstripping and paid them $65 an hour to install it.

I put the targa top back on, along with the Noah car cover. Then, I covered the car cover with a giant sheet of clear plastic. Only the edge of the thunderstorm passed over and only a few drops fell.

Just as I finished installing the new weatherstripping with the 3M adhesive, a giant thunderstorm came. I put the car cover and plastic back on. Now, it's been raining for hours. I'll do the garden hose test in a day or two.

I have been working on mine for some time now as well. I have been doing bits here and there. I am finally done getting the old stuff off and just waiting until morning to get some adhesive at the store so I can use plenty.

I also realized the kit was short the section for the rear hatch so I am glad I did not take that off yet and also found the dash to door pieces were not included so I will be buying those...and trying to drill out the one screw that almost seems welded in place! I got the head off with a chisel now its just a matter of getting the body out.

When I did mine I eventually decided to just take the metal rails off and that way I could move them around and get into the grooves easier...that seemed to speed things up for me.

When you put yours back on did you use a tool to push the new w/s down into the grooves any? Did you wait to let the glue set before you closed the doors and put the top back on?

Also on the directions it mentions putting some on each surface and letting it dry, did you do that or just use it like normal glue and put it on wet?

Default Used a wire coat hanger as a tool

Hi MorpheusGPR

When I began putting the new weatherstripping down, I practiced putting it in the groove. I put the entire length of w/s in the groove from one side of the car to the other just to see how everything would fit.

Once it all was in place, I put the lower screw in near door hinge on the driver's side. Then I put the 3M glue in the groove and on the w/s. I placed the w/s in the groove. Then, I put the screw in near the roof line. I let the glue dry about 30 seconds and then put the w/s into the groove. The 3M w/s adhesive dries very fast.

Next, I took a 14 inch length of wire coat hanger and folded it once. I used the rounded fold of the coat hanger to tuck the lower part of the "tongue" of the w/s into the groove. The coat hanger worked well because I could bend it a little to fit better.

The roof line w/s went in very nicely. The passenger side went in place nicely. But the driver's side w/s seemed to have some slight defects or distortion, but it doesn't leak rain. If I had noticed this when I was buying it, I would have asked for another one.

But I drove 27 miles in the rain last night at speeds of 55 mph, and didn't get any leaks. So I'm happy with the new w/s. My only concern was that when I put the targa top back on, the w/s seemed too fat and it took a lot of effort to pull down on the targa top while I tightened the top. Once I got the top on, everything looked perfect.

I had the same problem putting my targa top back on...took 15 minutes toget it where I could put the bolts in and snug it down. I let it sit in the hot sun all day today to help mold things more.

I used more glue then most I bet, I doubt it will be coming off, I used some glue around the screws as well to help tack those areas in place and seal anything I could.

I didn't use any glue on mine, I used the 3M glazing and bedding compoud on the corners, but no glue in the channels.

I think Vett-eight-nine asked us which weatherstripping we bought. I bought mine from Zip Corvette, and I think Zip got it from GM. They said it was better than the w/s available at some Corvette stores.

I didn't replace the plastic clips at the top of the A-pillars. They were so fragile that I'm sure they were not adding any support to anything. When I put new screws in to replace the rusty ones, I used washers with the screws. If new clips had come with the w/s, I would have used them.

Around the door how did you pull all the plastic pins out? I can't get mine to pull out and if I push them they just drop into the door lost forever. The new units have new plastic on them but I need o get this old stuff off first.

Thanks for the reply.
Are the prices I see on their web-site member prices or is there a further forum discount?
p.s. Sorry I can't help with the discussion. I've learned it's best to stay out of things I'm ignorant about.
