Default 1989 Hood Release Cable

I am having some difficulty getting my hood release to perform properly. The interior handle seems to be working fine. The actual release operators are well lubricated.

I was wondering if these cables over time just needed to be lubricated or do people just replace the cable?

Thanks in advance for you thoughts.

They stretch to the point of breaking over time, usually at the end connectors, but on some models they can be adjusted.

Gordon Killebrew suggests using white lithium grease at the ends where they fasten onto the hood latches.

Default 1989 Hood Release

It seems when I pull on the release actuators they are staying in the open position and not returning to the closed position.

I wasn't sure if that sounded like a cable problem or the actual actuators themselves.

I have a cable-lubing tool left over from my motorcycling days. It was good
at getting moly spray lube into regions that otherwise remained dry.
However, I have not tried to use it on a C4 hood latch cable.

My hood cable began to lose its firm action so I elected to change
it before it broke. It was failing at the grommet where it passes
through the firewall.

A p/n# and some photos can be seen here:

That thread also has posts by Da Mail Man showing the emergency
hood release mod that he and others have made.

If you don't know when the cable was last changed, change it.

You don't have the threaded black plastic connectors that clip onto the hood latch housings, do you?

If you do, you can tighten them to take up any slack in the cables.

I have a set of cables and latches from my 96 for sale if anyone wants to replace theirs.

And get Gordon's hood release tool, too, because that **** WILL break on you and at the most inopportune moment.
