check for codes. blinky light. my best guess is TPS sensor? that can be checked with voltmeter. ign on should show nice smooth changes from .54 to 4.5V when throttle opened up.

Your Vette uses a sensor - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor - to control fuel delivery. Sounds like the data yours is sending makes the ECM think that the engine is warm when in fact it's cold. Easiest to confirm or rule it out with a scanner. If the Sensor (and ECM) are good, the Scan will show a Coolant Temp at about ambient when the engine is cold. The temperature will then rise to the thermostat and as that opens, fall back a few degrees. It will then continue to rise until the radiator fan comes on and level off. If you don't have any means of scanning your Vette, you can buy another Sensor (about 9 Bucks) and simply plug it into the harness. If the engine starts and runs normally, you'll need to remove and replace the old one. It will lose some coolant in the process, so buy some of that too.

This might sound stupid, but have you compression tested it?

Cause if there is a buggered head gasket between 2 cylinders, you wont lose coolant, you wont get any in the oil, but it may cause it to serverely ping. When you unplug the spark advance, it is less likely to detonate cause its at the base timing.

Stupid as you think it sounds, its not out of the question, and its worth checking

You may find nothing, but its something i have seen on a toilet bowl injected chevy truck not long ago, somehow it had blown between 3 and 5, idled fine, and run pretty darn good with the EST wire unplugged.
