I just got the ARP head bolt set. Why do the ARP bolts require washers and not the OEM bolts. Also, all the bolts are coated with oil. My dumb question is it ok to use brake cleaning fluid to clean them up or is soapy water good enough.
dont clean them unless they are dirty
and use arp moly lube on both sides of the washer, and on the threads use some kinda of sealent with teflon. (ifi was home i would get the name and part number of the stuff i use)
the washers are there so the bolt heads wont "gull" the heads where the heads of the bolts meet the head

Read the instructions that should have come with the bolts. ARP makes a moly-lube/ sealer for their bolts to be used in holes open to the water jacket. In other words, use it across the board on your SBC. Torque values differ greatly between using their sealer/lube and anything else. Don't worry about the washers, just use them. This is a different and superior bolt to stock, follow their instructions to the letter. Factory procedures mean nothing here. Clean the bolts, the oil is to keep them from rusting in storage. Torque spec with their lube (on my LT1 bolts) is 60 lb-ft. Using anything else, it's 75 lb-ft. Lube the washers and under the bolt heads too. The devil is in the details.....
Thanks for the replies guys. Since I wanted to get my heads on this weekend, I used 30 wt motor oil. I torqued every bolt to 75ft-lbs in 3 steps. ARP should have supplied their moly lube with the bolt kit.
