Okay, so there I was in my 84 doin 35mph when i felt like doin 80mph. Anyways... she starts hesitating. My first thought....fuel pump. Second thought...spark. Third thought....vacuum. The idle fluctuates more than normal, and the engine really looses RPM when the tranny changes gears (auto). It takes a bit longer to start the engine as well. It's gotta turn over about 3 or 4 seconds longer.
Well, the fuel pump is way old...i know this. I haven't replaced it since I bought it (3 years ago) and no clue when and if it has been replaced.
Spark plugs...while not new....and not embarrassingly old.... shouldn't make the engine sound like I'm pushing and releasing the gas pedal.
Vacuum lines.....well I can only say that I didn't see anything out of place or any splits in the lines.
Any thoughts would definitely be appreciated. I bought a fuel pump from AutoZone. Still wrapped up.
CFI is absolutely right... do not just throw parts at it. If it were me I would start with the simple things.
Check spartk plug wires and connections. Remove distributor cap and look at the rotor. How do the connections look? pitted? Mine wants spark plugs every year. If I don't change them I get some hestitations in it. Fuel psi? Maybe it just wants a good tune up.
Most people hook up the gauge between the tb's. I also want to suggest maybe a fuel filter if you haven't changed that in a while as well. It doesn't sound like anything major just take your time and start with the basics.
Good luck.
So get this....pulled the plugs....and OH man. If you guys could see them, you'd ban me from the forum forever!!! Yeah, pretty cruddy. Terminals on the cap aren't too pretty either. Kinda oxidized.
I made it through 3 plugs after work before I couldn't see anymore. Gonna finish tomorrow. Figure this is enough to cause the issue?
I'll keep ya posted.
The plugs have a lot to do with your hard starting and rough idle, not sure about the rest.
What's your coolant temp when she acts up?
Probably means nothing, but my car was behaving exactly like that, if the coolant temp was over 230, which it was a lot because the rad was plugged solid.
I know, probably don't mean a thing... still, where's your temp at?
