Just backed the car out of the garage to put a new starter on the car. I pop the hood and notice my brand new serpentine belt is frayed on the front (the side of the belt facing the front of the car. I have been leaking some fluid and the pump was making some noise the last three weeks.
It appears the bearings are shot in the pump and the pully is wobbling and ate up my belt.
Anyone else have this happen? Dang it!
Cardone rebuilt pump from advanced autoparts? Anyone buy one and put it in their car?
Best bet - send pump to turn one steering (http://www.turnone-steering.com/) for a rebuild or buy one of their HD pumps. If I remember correctly the rebuild was $150.
All of the C4 guys I know that road race or Auto-X use them, including me. Do a search in the RR / Auto-X forum, you'll find many many threads.

Thanks Scaryfast!
This is the plan. Calling Monday.
I am having almost the same problem, after a track day an Oring from the high pressure hose broke and developed a big leak.
Although the PS Pump is still functional y asked Jeff from Turn one to prepare one pump.
I would rather spend a little more on well thinked and modified pump that wait for a blown hose , pump or gear when taking the car to a Track day.
After all, just towing the car back home would cost almost as much as the pump itself.
I have been taking pictures of the removal procedure of the PS pump, if you need them i can send you a copy for you to check out, pm me if you need them.
My vette is a 94.

No problem, happy to help.
While you're in there, you can also replace the high pressure line with a braided steel one. I had two failures there before I found the DRM replacement piece. Granted, you probably don't need it for a street car, but if you like spending money, go ahead.
Kinkajou, we should add your replacement procedure as a tech tip. This question seems to come up a lot lately as our cars age.
Please start a new thread with your pictures if you have time.
Hi Jeff
I found this to be a very informative web site on removing the PS Pump.
I will soon be posting the pictures I took of the procedure, but for now it might be very usefull.
However I found that removing the alternator is optional but will give a better view when removing the low pressure hose that is tucked behind .

About a 6 months ago I put a rebuilt Cardone PS pump on my 87 and it has been working fine.. However I don't take my car to the track... but for everyday driving... No problems.. $82.95 at my local parts dealer. I also bought a generic gear puller/ installer kit there for $15.95 that worked great .. I removed the alt and ps resevoir and it was very easy to reach..
pulley puller - Is there a special type/brand that should be used with the power steering pump on the LT1?? If so, please direct me to it...
When I said generic... I meant the name brand of the tool.. It is a GM specific Pulley Remover/Installer
This tool fits most if not all different size GM Pulleys

I have been trying to call these guys and no one answers the phone. Tried order line and tech line and e-mail?! I guess they are still in business? Any other alternatives?

Hmmm...not sure. I got mine last summer. The website says "new for 2007" on the homepage, hopefully they're just on vacation or something...
They are still in bussiness but they take a while to get in touch. Usually 2 or 3 days to respond each email. Never had the chance to talk to them on the phone, just got the answering machine.
I am being sent my pump today so it should arrive within this week.
