A word of advice. When I was around 17 or so, my mom still had me on her insurance policy. We got estimates to see how much it would cost for me to be on my own policy and the rate actually went down a lot. I would look into that. Oh, and your sons first car should be a junker. He is going to use and abuse that thing in some way, shape, or form.

I gotta call BS There is NO company that will insure 2 cars with a record like that ( 4 speeds and a DUI) on a 19 year old for a grand! Insurance is about averages and probability, you have gotten a speeding ticket a year since youve started driving and now a DUI. In any companys eyes, your a massive claim waiting to happen!
I applaud your hard work to pay your own way........but I aint buyin a grand a year.

You just misunderstood slightly, as they don't know about the DUI yet (and I won't even be driving for the next year). I have gone to traffic school 3 times out of 4 tickets, so it shows up as one ticket, and they didn't even raise my rates for that.
Even though I pay for it, this is my dad's policy where I am added as a secondary driver. I just pay the the probe @ $350 / 6 months and the corvette @ $150 / 6 months. We have multi-car discount, loyalty discount (like 20 yrs), honor student discount, the cars are driven less than 5000 miles per year, etc, etc. I think that the Corvette is so cheap because it's just the "extra" car that they think only my dad occasionally drives.
As far as the DUI insurance, I believe that I can just get a non-operators policy, in additional to my normal policy, from another company to fufill the sr-22 requirement for cheap. Otherwise, my 18 year old friend who has a DUI and 2 accidents is paying like $700 every 6 months for liability. I believe he dropped state farm for progressive for this rate.

My son wanted a car for his 16th birthday. I was shocked at how expensive insurance (collision and liability) is on any car. A Corvette or GT Mustang was out of the question - quoted $5,000 annually on a 2005 GT and $4,400 if he drives my 1996 LT4. The high rate is a blessing in disguise because no new driver needs a high-powered sports car. Anyway, we ended up buying a new Mustang "Pony" V-6. It's a nice car with just enough power to get out of its own way. The insurance was much cheaper - about $1,900 a year. I guess my question is has anyone found a way to insure a new driver any cheaper? All of our insurance is with Nationwide (multiple vehicles, house, etc.) and I have no violations. My son will have to be added to the policy before June 25th. Thanks.

When I was younger I had a few run-in's with the law and lost my license a couple times.. when I was 20 I bought a 1999 Trans Am.. I wanted full coverage on it since it was only 2 years old and had 11k on the clock.. the quoted rate for full coverage at the time was 14,500 a year for me, needless to say I went with basic liability which ran me 4,500 a year. Still have the car to this day, never recked it.. but just a hint as to just how bad insurance can really be.. Also I'd like to say I've never been in an accident since I've had my license, and my first lost of license was accomplished on the day I got my license by an off duty state trooper who chased me around in his hyundai waiving a shinny object out the window at me (which I thought was a gun, turned out to be his badge) needless to say I didn't pull over.. that day I earned 15 points on my license because he wanted to show off to his girlfriend who was in the passanger seat.. I later lost my license after a single speeding ticket becasue I still had points on my license when I got it back.. a 52 in a 45 if I remember correctly

First car, 1977, $34 a month for a 1966 GTO. Fast forward 30 years, 1986 Corvette, $35 a month. Not one accident in 30 years, 2 speeding tickets. Go figure.

Shop around as many companies treat youthful drivers differently. However, all of them are going charge a hefty rate because the accident rate of 16-20 year olds is sky high.
You can also save significantly by buying him an older car and only insuring it for liability. If he wrecks it and it's his faulty, you'd have to eat the loss. My guess is you could save around $1,000/yr by going that route.

That's why I think it's better to start off a young driver with a used car that will probably get in an accident or two anyway. Hopefully not though.

And you really should get it under your name, because the $900 a year your paying won't cover anything if the insurance company decides you defrauded them.

A little off topic. Mikey, who is your insurance carrier. I am currently paying about $1200 a year for my 2002 S10 (about 700) and 1990 Corvette (500). I am currently with Geico, but may be switching soon since I am going to work with another insurance company (Currently I am still a physical education teacher). I have not been able to find a cheaper rate online than Geico since they give me a discount for being alumni of Salisbury University.
Also Juan may be correct. I was on my parents policy until I was like 30. I thought it would be cheaper this way. Turns out it was chaper for me to go on my own.

I'm paying between 1000 and 2000 total to liberty mutual for my two cars. I am 19 years old. Oddly, it was actually cheaper on my insurance to keep a second car than it would have been to insure my LT4 by itself, even considering both of these cars are titled under my parents' names.
edit: Whoops, I'm 20, but was 19 when I got quoted this.

LOL reminds me of what i did back in the day. I bought older cars straight from the junkyard. I remember i bought a car for $50 had to start it with a screwdriver. I remember one dying on me once, took the plates off it and removed the VIN plate. Friends said what are you going to do for a car? i said i'll pick up another one for $50 tomorrow. The things i did when i was 18, learned alot about cars thou. i still can hear my dad saying there was no way that 72 nova was going to pass inspection. That thing was the only car i had that passed, it smoked like a demon, and when you opened the door it was like a cheech & chong movie. Ah good times... Just do what hot rodders have always done. You get the 6 cyl or 4cyl ones, there where some camaros that came that way, then drop in the V8. Just make sure the insurance company doesn't find out.

When I turned 16 my parents let me drive my mom's car - a 1979 Cutlass. Insurance was $55.00 extra a month for me to be added - the year was 1993.
Now, there is a moral to this story..... how much do you *really* trust your kid? And be honest with yourself. I got my first speeding ticket while still on parents policy, and their POLICY sky-rocketed for my actions.
Plus, if I God-Forbid ran over a school bus (or any other type of serious event) than the people listed on the POLICY are held liable for my actions, not just me.
Do you like your house? You could lose it if your kid screws up bad enough. Keep he/she on a completely separate policy to cover your a$$.
As soon as I got the ticket, I bought my own car, a 1984 Cutlass (in 1994) and my bad actions went with me onto my new policy. But at least my parents wouldn't be condemned for any idiot moves I would make.

Two years ago, we added my (16 year old) son to the policy on an '88 vette (liability only), and it increased the premium by $460 each month.
I am insured with Allstate amd live in TX with no accidents or violations for me or the wife. I also have 4 other cars on the same policy (including the C6 and the Sequoia) with full coverage and extended limits. The total policy premium was ~$900 every six months.
He had a minor accident about 8 mos after starting the policy and even though Allstate paid out $1100 (bumper dent and scratch on Explorer hatch) to the other driver and nothing to me, his part of the policy went to $670 per six months. Having the "young driver" on your policy is still the cheapest route.
