Default Ok time to learn codes?

MY 87 is knocking on the best gas I can buy ($3.50 gal ) I check the timing and replaced the knock sensor. Do I need an OBO I or II code reader( $40 ) or the whole unit????( $250 ) What should my next move be? Thank You

you can make a jumper wire and get the codes that way. Agent 86 sent me a post yesterday with an attachment on how. search my posts from yesterday, the one about an A/C issue and you will find his reply

Buy a 2¢ paper clip for a code reader and a FSM (Factory Service Manual) to tell you how to extract the codes, what they mean, and for the trouble shooting charts to lead you to a diagnosis and a repair. You can do a search to find how to extract the codes and identities for each of the codes, but without the trouble shooting charts you will end up wasting money replacing parts needlessly.
